Thanks for the video, Neil! I'm in my mid-40's and transitioning into an IT career and you answered the question I was seeking an answer for. I just took my first CompTIA A+ Cert exam, and passed. I take the second one soon. I took a course at a local Adult School for A+ and it helped greatly. The instructor was around my age and even referred me to a job opportunity and stated that even though I didn't qualify for all the requirements, since I showed so much interest and a desire to learn he felt I could do the job. I interviewed for the job, but it didn't work out because it was part-time, and that's okay. It was encouraging that someone validated my effort in learning and pursuit. I encourage all those around our age looking to get into IT, keep at it. Don't get discouraged.

I'm in my 40s and a nurse for years but recently got really fed up with our computer system who were designed by programmers who had no idea how a nurse or doctor works. So I decided to learn Software Engineering and become a double edged sword in Healthcare IT.

thank you for this video sir. I am 42 and a failed web designer from Canada who ended up getting into landscaping because I couldn't get a job in my field back in 2001. Since that time I have regretted not really giving it my best in regards to I.T. . Currently I am planning on going back to school and listening to that little voice in my head that keeps saying try again you can do this.

Thank you for the video, in my case, even that I have a degree in social communication, I've been working on IT over the past 7 years...started in Support call center, team lidership etc.. however because of the lack of lidership positions, I had to move to an users and infrastructure support position ( no more management but hey..I need the money)..well a few years in that position and I really liked it...now I'm 37 and I am thinking in start a 3yrs network and syst analyst career ( focusing later to go deep in cyber security)... I think that this thing of being in your 30s 40s and go IT is a new phenomenon and keeps going up, as the It workers are on high demand.

@Geno - if i'm new to the field, I'd just get it. So many companies have it as what it looks like as an HR filter. You'll never even get a phone call to explain you know AD if you're filtered out.

Interviewers will not even look at a CV,even with a basic certificate ,such as ComptiA A+..I have twenty years of customer service experience, have worked for the same company for seventeen years ive spoken to a few agencies that point blank told me, without experience, employers wont even look at a CV,even with certificates,so the catch 22 is, how the hell do you get experience when they wont give you experience??

@DDream 1986 well im in England and it seems when you're in your early 40's,im for the scrap heap..I'm studying for A+,doing the first one in April,set up some labs on virtual box, got my resume looking really good, and nothing.. I've worked in retail,so the starting salary doesn't bother me,ive worked in kitchens, so again, money has never been great..I actually want a real career with progression, but it seems that its Logan's run for me now..

Hello, great video!!! I really like your encouragement. In fact, I’m 40 and has been thinking either networking or software developer. Which one from the two I mentioned above, do you think it might be harder or require more material to master? I appreciate your info. Thanks!!!
@Flackbox
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Regino. There's loads of material for both and they're probably the same 'difficulty level'. An advantage of choosing networking is that there is established certification which is pretty much universally accepted by employers. Software development doesn't have that so there isn't such a set path to enter the industry. HTH, Neil

Hi Priya, EVERYBODY starts with no experience ;-) If you struggle to get your foot in the door for a paid job you can get some experience by volunteering to help the IT team at your current job or somewhere else. And make sure your resume is good, you wouldn't believe how many bad ones I see (such as grammatical or formatting errors). HTH, Neil
