You are an inspiration to so many of us age-groupers! And that doesn’t mean you need to outright win. Just putting your honest, real-life journey out there is what our collective community fuels itself on. Always gonna be haters among the true supporters. They can pound sand. And Simon, you’re gonna keep getting better. That’s how it all works, right? Takes time and consistency. Use whatever fuel you need and just, keep, going! Sometimes people forget that there are more than 50 professionals in the sport and there are hundreds of events per year with pro fields that aren't televised. Professional triathletes at all levels make this sport better. I do think trying to do both 70.3 AND full IM competitively is VERY hard, very few pros do it well, but you need to do what you love! Screw the haters, and keep moving forward, Simon!

You have the most important piece in being a pro triathlete in this day and age: the swim. The bike and run will come! If you don't have deeply ingrained swim technique from a young age you're pretty screwed nowadays. I bet someone like Lionel would give up some bike and run pedigree to have your swim. Just keep at it!

Well young man, set all things aside and focus. At 69, I have seen a few things, not all, but some. One thing is for sure, we all know it, so use this as a mantra.......talk is cheap...! Like you said, missing that training partner. Have an open invite to see if any of those who are keyboard specialist would like to come give it a try. I dear say, most if any would not. Will that quite the nay-sayers, highly doubtful......Talk is cheap, put up or shut up. I never give them a second look. Be who you are and try not to let them into your head, intellect is difficult to find these days.....I've watched a few of your videos and enjoy your dedication immensely. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it. You already are head & shoulder above many, carry yourself in that regard and you will be always a winner, regardless how the race turns out.........Had an old saying in the open wheeled sprint car racing.....if you want to run with the big dogs.....you have to get off the porch first......!

It's nothing personal, but I would also casually tend to think that a pro that has a slower finishing time than some age groupers or female pro's doesn't really belong in the pro field. That's just some arbitrary intuitive thing. Maybe there's an assumption that people want to have their pro license just for the bragging rights, but thinking about it, it doesn't make much sense. It likely wouldn't feel as good to be a pro at the bottom than an AG at the top. Through your explanation of how relatively easy it is to get a pro license, I do see the virtue in actually taking on that challenge when I think about it. By staying an age grouper you'd enjoy a lot better results and more positive reinforcement and implicitly less incentive to actually grow and surpass your current abilities, rather than just maintain them. I mean, who would you really find more admirable in the end? Someone who kicks ass in the age grouper categories and consciously turns down a pro license just to get to keep winning and effectively stroking their own ego as effectively as possible - or someone who's willing to take a beating and possibly looking like a fool just for the opportunity of personal growth that it offers? The latter takes a lot of courage and humility whereas the former is probably more driven by fear and pride.

Don't listen to the haters. Nothing to gain from winning AG events except an ego boost. I would actually like to see more top AGers turn pro & see added depth to pro fields. People want to win their AG instead of finishing 40/80 MPros. Pro racing is completely different than AG racing & harder in a lot of aspects. I think top AGers just don't see the draw because our professional athletes aren't always true professional athletes. People aren't maintaining their amateur status in most major sports if the can get into their respected pro fields. I almost think there needs to be some sort of obligation to compete as a pro once you hit the threshold but I guess it's hard to mandate that if people see it as a takeaway (no Worlds, no AG awards). Reality is that the top AGers are pros who haven't turned pro. So I don't get the snarkiness when you made the choice to challenge yourself at the highest level of the sport. If you didn't turn pro you would have, for sure, taken AG awards/slots away from other athletes.

Surely no one other than yourself can decide whether or not being a pro can work for you.
