What I liked about this video is that the author showed the hook up for the test equipment most don’t and showed the oscilloscope and the VTVM as he tuned the radio was simple and not full of theory.

My technique with using a scope is to narrow the sweep and use the vertical expansion of the amplitude as an optical volt meter, looking and concentrating for only an amplitude change for maximum length. Yes using the meter for a peak works well as it can define minute changes that eye cannot detect on a scope. In the end it really makes very little difference in receiver operation. Achieving the ultimate peak can narrow the bad width some degree making it hard to tune, thus the band spread control compensates for that. You did a very nice demo using equipment most beginners can afford as well learning by doing their own restoration work. Congratulations !

That's how we did it back in the day after we built all of our equipment by hand in kit form. My choice in kits was EICO. In my day I used just a VOM and an EICO 324 RF Generator. Great video! However in my lab today I've added a vintage B&K 1801 Frequency counter to set frequencies accurately. Working with "Hot Chassis" was the rule of the day .One item I would suggest to add is an isolation transformer with a Variac. Not all Variac' s are isolated.

It may not be evident in the video, but everything here ties to an isolation transformer.

I have never after aligning at least 50 hot chassis radios..and not once got even a tingle while aligning them..and the power was hooked directly to the house wiring and with the plug inserted either way, and no isolation transformer..maybe Im lucky...and Im not trying to say anything against the poster..it is an excellent video thank you...and Im NOT saying it will not happen to anyone else..

I'm not following you're post entirely, so I will speak to the isolation transformer aspect specifically, and for anyone following along, that the setup in this video has all equipment floating, and connecting to isolation. The radio antenna, I believe is dipoled, and not grounded. Everything is floating.

@@retrotechandelectronics I was just making a comment in general and not about your video..I was saying that I have never got shocked aligning a radio without a isolation transformer, and plugged directly into the main wiring of the house..on a hot chassis radio, as in..one leg of the power cord hooked directly to ground(B-) or chassis, in the radio, while using a non polarized plug..

That’s how we did it in Vo-Tech school forty rears ago. I still have my Heathkit equipment. Couldn’t afford Sencore, B&K, HP, or other expensive brands.

While this idea won't overcome the speaker volume, you could use the zero set on the VTVM to move the needle to the center of its travel as denoted by the small - 0 + marking at the bottom of the scale. This is designed to show adjustments such as this. For more deflection, connect the VTVM probe to the plate of the O/P valve via a capacitor.

True, this does for this VTVM present such a possibility

On radio (Trancievers)that are set-up for 50 Ohms - do you need a 600 Ohm to 50 Ohm adapter to use the signal generator?

So, if you were to use a dummy load on the speaker what would you use, say 8ohm resistor for an 8ohm speaker and than take the speaker out of line?

Correct.

I'm wondering if the alignment tool could go through one core and then tweak the core on the bottom. Many of the tools are designed to do just that.

no, this particular one cannot do that , i must turn the unit over.

There were a few radios like that, but most were not. IF transformers were made for only one time adjustment over the years. They were made of cheap plastic as a one piece unit. Too many radio techs couldn’t keep their dammed hands out of the IF cans. The best IF Transformers were the the ones that tuned with a simple trimmer cap.manufacturers used cost cutting techniques wherever they could, which led to the downfall of the industry. Shitty Pc board construction was another bastardly approach. Transformer less chassis were not only cheap but hazardous to the public. Ono polarized AC cords and power cords that came off when you took the back off were more signs of shitty skills. I worked for a major manufacturer, i know of what I speak. Its no wonder we lost our business to the yellow hoards. ..
