@OneTequilaTwoTequila

@@AlexdAviator You're on the right track with relativity, but the speed of the carrier is NOT almost zero relative to the speed of the plane. If it was, they'd have the same speed, and the plane would never catch up to the carrier. If the speed of the carrier was 20 knots and the wind was blowing at 25 knots, then the 'relative' approach and touchdown groundspeeds of the plane would be reduced by 45 knots vs. a no-wind approach to a land runway. Headwinds help, and the speed of the carrier into the wind helps additionally.

Sea-Tac was socked in and was at minimum visibility at best . He had zero visibility on finial approach at about 1550 feet he said he caught sight of the lights and called it. At 1500’ he would have had to wave off. When they got on the ground the FAA guy told him that ex-Navy pilots are scary, no emotion and ice in their veins. He never told the guy how nervous he was having him looking over his shoulder. lol He said that was a piece of cake compared to hitting the deck of a carrier at night in bad weather.

Naval and Marine aviators that fly off aircraft carriers truly are some of the best in the world. Imagine your runway is always moving it’s never in the same place on top of that it pitches up and down and rolls left to right. A navy fighter pilot is no less than a lieutenant. Need a four year degree and 6 year service minimum to begin simulator training. Usually 33-34 years old at first solo flight. Even higher for ships deck. Generally 10 years of flying then become commanders. It's a 20 year inlist minimum.

Жыл бұрын
@@jaydensdream714on't they start training from the moment they to military college? If they go in at 18, graduate at 22 then it's feasible they could be training in jets by 25. I knew a guy in England that joined the RAF in the 80s and he was flying Jaguars after only a couple of years going from a single prop trainer to a twin then to fighter. There was no degree perse you just went into officer training at the airforce equivalent to Sandhurst i believe. It's moved more to a bachelor degree in pretty much everything now so it doesn't surprise me if it takes longer to get into a jet or any military aircraft but I've seen American fighter pilots that are Still in their 20s. There's no long enlistment required that not true not sure where you got that from; Commercial airlines in America have loads of ex military guys and gals in their 30s the same with many countries. You can't fly combat in fighters after about 40

@@glennoc8585 I never said there are enlistment requirements. Generally speaking you can't enlist for flight training that takes 30 months if your only enlisted for the next 30 months that's all. Most pilots fly 2-3 Yeats them go on to civilian life but a vast majority continue being training pilots or perhaps officer training. Also vast majority go on to be commercial pilots for one reason, money. 60-70k most you make but pilot for UPS makes 200k easy...

I don't believe we would see much in the dark of night. All landings whether by day or night are instrument assisted using some sort of glidescope to direct the pilot. He/she has to say "I got the ball" and a man on deck has to agree or the pilot has to go around. Also, we shoudn't expect the deck to resemble a Christmas tree as it's a ship of war that needs to hide wherever possible from potential enemies.

Because the footage is sped up. Plus those jets catch a rope that stops them, otherwise they'd never stop on the deck by themselves.

He had plenty of time. The birds stack in the pattern and usually approach the boat downwind along the port side before hooking left and lining up with the LA. As long as he's go with fuel onboard, airspeed, flaps, gear, and hook, all he has to do is guide it and adjust throttle. It is quick, but a few seconds can last a long time. It's like when you come to a stop at an intersection in a car. You are steering, letting off the gas, and applying the brakes quite quickly with minor and gradual adjustments which you have practiced sufficiently to stop the car smoothly behind the line. Or at least I hope you're a good enough driver to do this.

The ship's wake acted like a runway, making it more of a sure thing for the pilot to line up and land perfectly.
@Guardian179
Жыл бұрын
Except the ship's wake is about 10 degrees right of the final heading, and the carrier is constantly moving forward, so the landing spot is continuously moving slightly to the right as you approach. Takes a lot of skill and practice. Hat's off to these guys

@johnlucier5654

@@jonnywilkinyou can only let instinct take control when youve learned the skills. That said not everyone who wants to fly gets to fly in the navy, and not everyone who gets USN wings goes on to an F18 carrier unit. (And not every one of them will be accepted to the Blue Angels) So with all that in mind you are both correct. Instinct alone might get you a VFR rating in a Cessna. If your daddy is an admiral you might even get your wings and keep them long enough to get shot down on a bombing run over hanoi, while the rest of your squadron followed standing orders and made it back safely. Thats another subject, but I like heroes that dont get shot down.

I wouldn't want to try that in a video game. He circled the carrier and nailed the landing in less than a minute. No room for error at speeds like that.
