Ode to Joy is the simple name for the final movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony in D minor, Op. 125, and is the final complete symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven, composed between 1822 and 1824. It was first performed in Vienna on 7 May 1824. It's regarded as one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. Oh a flash-mob is a thing not a group and can be done by anyone anywhere to spread fun music and as you said fun.

Beethoven did not "write" it, he composed the music. The lyrics were written by Friedrich Schiller, one of the greatest German poets ever, and very close friend of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (who wrote Faust, the single greatest piece of literature ever written). When Schiller died early, Goethe missed him till the end of his long life ;__; Beethoven adapted Schiller's humanist poem "An die Freude" into music for his 9th symphony. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedrich_Schiller de.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_die_Freude

An Ode (pronounced Oh-d) is a poem in praise of something. The original poem was called "Ode to Friendship", but by changing one letter in the German, the composer turned it into the Ode to Joy . The crowd would know the words because the Ode is the official Anthem of the European Union (this took place in Spain) I am a massive fan of Flash Mobs. A group of people, usually a musical organization, arranges to perform together unannounced in a public place. Almost all the time they make it look like it's spontaneous. I've seen one in malls and train stations where participants dress like maintenance workers, guards and shop workers! Some involve dancers instead of singers or musicians, or along with them. There is a wonderful video of a group who organized a flash mob for their friends at their wedding! This is a professional orchestra, and most of the singers were their chorus. One last note on this particular one: watch I again and keep an eye out for the little girl who starts it. She stands there through the entire thing, watching the bass player . But disappears at the very last moment! Loved your reactions Try watching the entire of Beethoven's 9th Symphony while following the words to the Ode in English - and keep in mind that the man who chose to rewrite it to say JOY was a composer who had gone deaf!

The "song" is a well-known German poem by Freidrich Schiller called "An die Freude" or Ode to Joy. Beethoven loved this poem and intended to set it to music over various periods in his life, and he finally got the chance in the early 1820s for his ninth symphony. Since Beethoven is still a popular artist in Europe and Germany in particular I wouldn't doubt that many Germans can sing this, and at the very last part of it, the choir sings the final portion of this performance. This was basically an entire orchestra coming together, piece by piece as the song develops in real-time, and is finally joined by a chorus of singers. Really, this performance was conducted BRILLIANTLY.

Man on bass, joined by woman on cello, then violin and bass Oboe. Here comes the string section..... When there can be over 80 people in an orchestra, a flash mob requires a LOT of pre-planning. Here's the conductor... :D And my favorite, the horn and percussion section. This Beethoven symphony includes the Ode to Joy and features a choir in addition to the instruments. Oh, yes. The crowd is anticipating the chorus. ....and all it took was a bit of money in a top hat to start it all off.
