I live in middle tennessee and we have a huge zinc mine just down the road from where i live and the main color of the sphalerite from there is the dark brown, along with fluorite, barite, clacite, galene and etched galena, all with large crystals except for the sphalerite which mainly have small crystal sizes a little smaller that what one of the fused crystals size was that you had, tha last time i was in there taking a tour with my mineralogy and petrology class we hit into a vug and i was able to get a few samples of sphalerite out of it that was at least twice the size as the whole specimen you had was, they said it was the largest crystal size for sphalerite vug that had been found in the whole mine.....however the sphalerite that comes out of east tennessee mines about 100-150 miles away from the middle tennessee mine (and close to 800 feet in elevation gain from the middle tn mine) has sphalerite that comes out of it that is really yellow, even a lil lighter yellow than what you had, kinda crazy

+Rough Market I'm hoping to do some fluorite looking up north tomorrow. I have an interesting mine that I've not been to yet and lots of optimism. A video will be following within the week. I'm told there are some lovely water-brown, cube shape fluorites to be found.

+Caver461 Very nice, looking forward to the video adventure. Fluorite is one of my favourites and can produce some stunning pieces, but I have yet to come across cubic specimens. We took several trips to Haliburton last summer and have some really deep purple, violet, green, and clear Fluorite, but so far none of it is cubical. I'm sure you know the place : ) More exploring this spring and summer and I'll have volume 1 and 2 with me so I can get you to autograph them if we run into you!

Not seeing my previous comment, so redoing. What do you consider to be over the hill at the Montrose occurrence by Lowe's? Straight over the hill that is by the store's driveway or is it the higher hill off to the left of that area? I went yesterday over the lower hill and found a very steep area with reeds taller than me and got ticks on me. A few large rocks along the road at the bottom. Wasn't sure where you meant.

Okay, went there today with digging gear but unfortunately didn't really find anything. Managed to dig up and turn over some heavy rocks and cracked some open but still no luck. I think I would need a lot more equipment brought in and more muscle. Other than that white rock (forgot name) didn't see any crystals. Not sure if I should go back or where to try next. Darn!

LOL!! Grew up right off Kalar road Mike.. You should have seen the boulders there 30 years ago, the size of small cars!! That hill behind Lowe's is actually not all rock, was a city dump for 20 yrs back in the 50's and 60's. I got some nice purple ones out of there years ago!! Still lots to find there, like you say if you want to work!! Glad you got some good specimens!! Andrew..

Sort of...nothing like what I had hoped for, but a few scraps of crystallized material. I found a bit of a green, opaque specimen right on the surface in the dirt, coming down hill. Not sure what it is, but it's interesting as I saw no green anywhere else. Must have been a chip off something someone else dug out. Seems to me a person would need a whole crew or a tractor to get some of the boulders turned over that haven't been picked over already. Too hot and humid to work that hard during the summer heat.

Hey I just recently came across you channel. Love the videos you've put up. I have a cottage in the Bancroft area on a lake called Jamison lake. I live on the outskirts of Saint Louis in Saint Peters and have wanted to go rock hounding but really it seems like the most exciting it gets here without going deep south into the state is hitting the road cuts where they had to take out sides of hills. Of course all of these sites have been heavily hunted so It's almost like having to plan a trip for the purpose of hunting.

So those boulders, I see them everywhere. Usually parking lots, parks and such. Are those similar to the boulder you extracted from or are they just cut from somewhere? They look very similar to the ones in the video. Also, is there some sort of group I could join to learn more? I'm from the GTA, so I imagine I could travel to some of the places you've mined from.
@Caver461

The boulders may look similar, but they need to come from a very specific layer to yield crystals. Depending where you live would define what mineral club you should join.
