@@steve5772 A lot of it is in prep. Being good at your job means you prepare for it well. Getting an even coat/finish doesn't take much learning, but getting that prep so clean and tidy takes a fair bit of skill. If you've had workshop/engineering/mechanical jobs where you can transfer such a mindset from, you get a headstart on a newbie to doing these things. I'd never painted a car in my life, but my missus had a dent in her rear wheel arch, some filler and a few sunny days later, the body work looks good again. Paint shop wouldn't probably done a better job, but as a first timer, the colour matches well (if anything filler is more of a pain). Making sure surface is clean, masking up properly, getting that primer on nicely & then building up a few layers of paint is really all there is too it. Lacquer coats are harder than base/colour coat just from my very brief experience doing bits and pieces.

Although it is a very nice car, at the end of the day, it is just, effectively, an Escort MK3 facelift, often referred to as a MK4, it's a 1.4 poverty model and, inspite of the nice condition, it is not very desirable, I don't reckon it would sell for a lot. Definately more desirable and worth more as an RS rep[ica, especially if it is done nicely/properly and not messed up with OTT bits and pieces, But that's just me!

Aarrggh! Six fousand quids? I reckon I could whack that in a container, ship it here to Adelaide, make it a proper replica and flog it off for 40,000 bux. Personally I would keep the red car original and sell it as is with any parts that apply to it (possibly even via a classic car auction such as Bangers N Cash's Mathewsons for a bit of extra publicity and as an experiment) There's bound to be enthusiasts with Escorts with good interiors but bodies too far gone that would be good donor cars to complete the red one. Then retain the RS Turbo parts with the white car as useful spares/potential swaps with other RS enthusiasts. Trying to convert the red car into an RS could be a problem and would never be a true original car.

Wise decision to sell the red Escort. It's probably worth more to someone wanting to convert it back to its original state than an RS Turbo but it would be interesting to know what any future buyer intends to do with it. For that reason there is probably little interest in the parts; in fact they might deter someone from buying the vehicle.

But surely, just painting over the ‘scabs’ will be a waste of time. Unless you cut out the rot, it will just come back through. The scabs already indicate that the rust has come through from the other side. You might have a few surface stone chips, but you are just delaying the inevitable. IMHO.

I love watching body paintwork.. I wanted to do my Opel Manta 1.8 Berlinetta my concern where old paint meets fresh paint after time they fade out.. and sadly unless the lacquer coats help to prevent that I am not sure..? Also In the 1980's was lacquer actually used ..? I know my car Mercedes CLK 320 52 plate has had paint and even if you look at it back when I bought It you can really see the paint had been addressed Paint magician type job.. touch ups.. Matching a red paint work is tricky back in the day I had 1982 Cortina Crusader 2.0 I was a mini cab driver and Coventry Council said they let the car go through this time but a full re-spray was required. Just an honest opinion..

Right decision on the red Escort I think although I personally think looks too good to turn it into an RS Turbo. I would think it best to sell the RS Turbo parts in one lot and sell the car separately. I'm sure many enthusiasts will want to keep it stock. You don't want it hanging about taking up space in your garages and it really mustn't be kept outside. At least you've added some value with doing the paint job. As you say, searching for an interior could take a long time. Up to someone else now to hunt for an interior or perhaps someone who already has a similar model perhaps in poorer body condition they can transfer the interior to this one.

It is a great looking example, but I can understand your dilemma. Sometimes options are excellent, but in this case they so easily fog the issues. You are running a business, time lost on details is money lost to the business. In your position, packages are undoubtedly the way to move things on, the only question is will the same customer want both the first-rate car and the bits? I guess you will have to let the incoming offers decide, so it will be watch this space.
@amphetamineblue4172
