Driving in the highlands in Scotland, I told my then husband I could hear bagpipes. He said I was imagining it. Lo and behold, we rounded a corner, and there was a solid Scotsman, dressed in his kilt, against a backdrop of a snow topped mountain, with a little tartan stool beside him for donations, playing the bagpipes. I have a photo of me standing beside him. It was one of the highlights of my trip.

In the context of a funeral it absolutely will. I don’t cry, hardly ever but when I heard this in person while walking behind my last grandad’s (I have none now) hearse it hit me hard and unexpectedly. The tears just flooded out of my eyes despite trying to fight them back. The silence after was the most surreal thing ever too. Any time I hear it, it transports me back in time to the exact moment I was walking down that street and I see everything I saw then in my mind. I haven’t been to any funeral since, not out of disrespect but I just can’t go through it again. I make my own peace through never forgetting the people who die.

I learned to play bag pipes 2 years ago, today was the first time i played in front of anybody. My father moved on from this earth and i was asked by my family to play. Being one of the hardest days of my life i some how made it. Form this day forward when ever i hear this song it hits me hard, farewell pops i hope you enjoyed what i played for you, please continue to guide, continue to love and i will continue to think about you daily.

Sorry for your loss. From this day forward when you play it will be a tribute to your dad. Find a place where he took you outdoors as a kid. Go there and play like the guy in this video. Most people love the bagpipes and will be moved by your solitary performance. Some may find peace in what they hear and you'll be able to tell your dad through song, thank you for the memories he made with you at the place you choose to play.

My step father was a Scotsman through and through, the day of his funeral service unbeknownst to me, my mother choose this song to be played as his farewell by a friend on his bagpipes. As the oldest son I tried to be strong for my mother, but as he walked in the hall and started to play, the hairs on my back stood up and I broke into tears, this tune is so powerful. RIP Charley.

With no words this song asks... No, It commands your respect. It commands you remember their sacrifice. Be it from a soldier serving in the line of duty, or from a simple person who did right by others. And it commands you move on, for you still have much to do in this world, people to help, friends to comfort, and lives to touch. You may still have time to honor this song with your passing as well.

Thank you for this beautiful song. My father loved this song and he loved the bagpipes. He passed away just last Friday and we had his memorial service today (he donated his body to science). His cousin was at the service today and played this on the bagpipes-was WONDERFUL. I know my dad was grinning ear to ear in heaven.
