Hey guys, thanks for watching! I'm getting a lot of questions about "can't I just set up some ambient mics that are pointed at the crowd?" That's a fair question. Yes, you definitely can do that and it will help. However, I've done both and I prefer the 3DME system instead personally. Setting up the mics takes more work, and you can also just get the one drunk guy in front of the mics that you pick up as well lol. Not to mention, that it doesn't solve the problem about talking to a fellow musician on stage who comes up to you to ask you something. Also the mics are stationary, where as these 3DME earbuds do move with you, so you get the ambience from where you are in the room... you move closer to the drummer, and the drums get a little louder. That part is subtle, but it's definitely different. I prefer the 3DME personally, but do what works best for you, your band, and your budget. Thanks for watching, and adding to the conversation! I appreciate it!

1000% agree that the one crazily overlooked design issues is that the volume slider in the app should update the position set in the body pack. Also, they need to add some way of showing the limiter working, ie when it kicks in or out would seal the deal. Thanks for this video

Great option to be able to control the amount of ambient. In rooms that are just terrible acoustically, you can isolate them and not bring in that boomy, muddy tone into your ears. When the acoustics are really good, bring in some ambient and get the full experience. Thanks for this great review.
I tested the first generation at NAMM maybe 6 years ago. It's unfortunate to have such a high buy in price for a full band, but I would still splurge for them if they would take an AA battery like my IEM packs- but rechargeable is a deal breaker- I can't spend thousands and risk having a dead battery and not being able to use it

I love this kind of tech. As a musician who is also a parent and apartment dweller, headphones are key. As a neurodivergent individual, I (begrudgingly) use Apple AirPods Pro quite a bit in a day- the os17 update has definitely benefitted me and my life so far- so I'm even more keen on this kinda thing. I don't dislike the isolation of IEM's, but to be fair I'm generally not playing out and when I'm musicking with others, I do wish I had that "ambient passthrough" feeling. Here's hoping for a very thoroughly researched V2 that doesn't require a V3!

These are a terrific idea, particularly for singers. The most common complaint I hear about IEM from singers is that they can’t ‘hear themselves’, even though their monitor mix is clearly biased toward their voice being the most prominent element of the mix. A lot of it is because they can hear themselves as part of the 4:18 ambient. We tested this by adding an omnidirectional mic on stage and it reduced a lot of complaints and weird mixes

"...IEM manufacturers need to incorporate this technology into their receivers and monitors" - they have, many times before, like the ACS system. ACS's system is almost identical to the one above, save for having an app, and that was released over a decade ago but has since been discontinued. The main reason these systems never succeed is because people don't want to have to use proprietory in-ear buds, they want to be able to use the brand/model that suits them. ACS do a set of in-ear buds that have filters that allow ambient noise, although it's a fixed level rather than being controllable and so that's a half-way house. The main issue with the systems like these in the video is that they're just not practical for professional use on a even a small scale; 99% of artists bring their own in-ear buds, they don't to have to use a particular brand, and they connect those to the in-house packs. This system in this review is for consumer-level only, as you pointed out.

I see that a lot of folks are happy with this system. What I don't understand, though, is how this can be. The whole advantage of IEMs is to be able to kill ambient sound in order to hear an appropriate mix of sources. As such, earphones that don't isolate so well are thought to give an inferior IEM experience. So how can defeating the very principal that makes IEMs advantageous be a good thing?
@ScottUhlMusic

Some people enjoy the isolation. Other people like the direct mix, but dislike the isolation. This gives you a solution to get the best of both worlds. If you like being “isolated” (no problem with that), then yeah, these aren’t for you.
@davidlabrecque7141
8 ай бұрын
@@ScottUhlMusic I guess the key is that this system gives the user the ability to mix in the ambient to the level of his liking rather than be at the mercy of raw ambient SPL, which, if not attenuated at all, would drown out any attempt at monitoring a direct mix (as everyone knows from direct experience). My first thought is that, theoretically then, a mediocre-isolating earphone would serve the same purpose. But, of course, the frequency response for the ambient would be way off (muffled high end), plus there would be no variable control over the ambient level. Really, it's just like putting that ambient mic out there, only it follows you around. I wonder if you get enough audience in the mix. I suppose the ideal would be to have the ambient mic covering the audience AND this system for your immediate surroundings. Interesting stuff. Whoda thunk it? Thanks for the info!

I have the latest generation of AirPods which have an ambient mic and limiting and I tried using them at band practice recently in place of earplugs. I’d love to practice and play using in-ears and I’m in the process of acquiring the gear to build a iem rig but until I get the whole band on board and we are connecting all our gear through the mixer at practice, I’d at least like something to protect my hearing during rehearsals but also allow me to hear the music clearly, just attenuated. The AirPods actually do a decent job but sometimes they act a little strange and then I may get notifications during a solo, LOL! Once we hopefully transition to and iem rig the I’d already have something like these to use with my Sennheiser G4.

I'm the poor guy in the group, but like you I love IEM's and believe they are better than sliced bread. as a band we live in an all digital world ( honestly any band out there would be jealous of our set up ) At my home studio I'm still in the analog world ( my mic and iems are all Sennheiser and currently my buds are Sennheiser 500pro ) I guess I will have to try again maybe with the new receiver/transmitter? cause I couldn't here shit with the old one. I cant imagine its my home studio. But I cant justify 2k for customs that may not work for me? I really really want them to work for me.

Completely unrelated to this video and a total newbie question... just don't know who to ask lol. I like to plug into my pc with my guita amp modeler and play along to music while using my IEMs. I want to also add a microphone and/or keyboard to the mix. Would i need a mixer or a little audio interface? And would there be noticable latency? Such a newbie question. Sorry haha

You can probably just do that from your audio interface and your DAW like logic 👍

What do these sound like on their own? Occasionally, I have to get on a loud stage and play and sing with monitors instead of my iems. Would these work in a pinch to decrease volume without the muddy isolation of earplugs?

Just curious but couldn’t you achieve basically the same thing with a wireless lapel mic on a channel of your mixer that only sends to your IEM? It’d sure be a lot cheaper.

I have a question. Could you use these iem like this . The only mix coming from a line in from my line 6 helix to a cloud vocal iem system. The rest of the band comes thru the Ambient microphones on the iem . So you would hear from stage monitors, and my guitar would come thru a line from my Line 6 helix . I really appreciate what you do .

What about this for a cheap alternative; why not set up a mic on each side of stage and have those signals just go into your normal in-ears? Wouldn't this effectively be the same as it captures the ambience of the room?

I've wanted to pull the trigger on these for a while because of how the mics move as you turn your head. but then I stumbled on the JH audio Ambient pros and can't seem to find reviews that I can use to make up my mind. do you know anything about these and the Similarities and differences? I heard the JH use DPA mics, whereas the 3DMe use mics similar to hearing aids, so I was wondering if you could help me out with any info you could find. Thanks so much for the video

Why not just set up a crowd mic and set your levels in a program like mixing station and save your money and you don't have to have two packs ?
@ScottUhlMusic

Crowd mics are nice, but they have their drawbacks too. They are stationary, and you can get just the one drunk guy at the front, as well as that doesn’t help hear each other talking to each other on stage. Also, the 2 packs thing really is not bad as I address in the video. I’ve done both stage/crowd mics and these, and these are better IMO 👍

It reminds me of an old song from 1974, by the band Reunion, called "Life is a rock (but the radio rolled me"). They achieved the effect by recording every other line, and then mix them. I've never seen anyone do it for real, though. I'm impressed. 👌👍

If someone doesn't want to spend $800, do you think you could achieve similar results by using an existing IEM system and setting up a crowd mic on the stage (which band members could also use as a talkback)?

@@ScottUhlMusic It is cool and definitely fills a need, but there is a reason all the professional in-ears make the cable replaceable. Even Shure's $99 in-ears have a replaceable cable.
