I didn't go for architecture because of my high school mentor who said there is no good living in architecture because the Chicago market is over saturated. As much as like what I do, this is the biggest regret of my life. If you have passion and determination for what you do, you'll enjoy it and you'll find a way to make it work.

It's perfectly designed. Cozy and warm and open, all at the same time. Spaces are flexible. The flow of air is incredible. Perfect play of colours whilst not going over the top. Especially the courtyard and trees blended with pool just puts you in that naturist space when one gets up in the morning. I loved two of the furniture concepts. The glass table in main hall with lots of books underneath it and the dining table with those benches giving you unrestricted access to whole table and simplifying your motion. Just perfect.

Wow!!!! What an amazing house and property. I just love this whole design. It’s architecture, it’s design, but not cold as many homes that are “over designed” are. You know, more like showrooms that are just there to impress people. This house oozes warm colorful personality, a home that is lived in. You can clearly see what’s important to Steven Ehrich and his wife, instead of “what does people want to see if they visit me”. I love trees, and my dream is to build a house on a property with old majestically trees , just like this guy did. I just love how they designed The Whole build around those trees. I love the “multicultural modernism”. That’s just my style. It’s sort of a bohemian meets design outlook. You can clearly see how he designed the house and she warmed it up with her bohemian comfortable style, and of course his treasures from traveling around the world. One of the things I loved and found made this home so personal was all the photos on the kitchen walls. I wish you could show us more of this home

I've seen this house on television and in books and magazines over the last decade+ and I'm impressed by how well the interior design has matured as they've acquired little things. The floor plan and much of the furniture is still the same of course but the interiors Simply beautiful.

I love the end results. It's modern yet eclectic in the use of art, glass, and various other textures/materials. I love it. After seeing your comment I went to look for the house and found earlier versions on houzz. Even though there weren't many changes, I have to say that this is by far the best version. Love how they've used their own belongings to beautify the space. I also like how the furniture they replaced (bench instead of chairs, more elegant armchairs instead of midcentury modern) makes the space more elegant and eclectic.

Wonderful ideas and execution , the culmination of a lifetime obvioisly of all his best multicultural experiences and ideas. MY husband who was a builder and I, in retirement, went to the former Colonial capital of Central America while we were cruising on our sailboat. WE lived for 6 mos with a local family in an authentic Spanish colonial courtyard centered home next to the most beautiful 16th century church there....we fell in love with the town, the family, their friends , the social life, the year round spring climate, the tropically planted courtyard centric homes, everything about the place. Later we sold the boat bought an existing house with views,of the surrounding volcanoes and went to,work designing and building our dream home. IT is in keeping with the Spanish colonial locale....mahogany and cedar solid cabinets and woodwork throughout, all local materials, enormous wall,of arched glass windows on the upper, level to bring the views in....deep terraces for outdoor living providing a large outdoor living room in front of a traditional two, fountained Spanish Mudejar courtyard. I did the drawings and the decorative tile and mural painting . My husband hired and managed the construction team. It took us seven years to complete, living on site with an average of 4 workers....A similar house in California would have cost us millions. I planned the garden having had some university training in garden design.....Aside from being highland coffee finca country, this once was the largest cut rose exporting region in the Americas right here, so the volcanic soil is perfect and we were still able to get the stock for a Spanish style rose and tropical plant garden. It is bliss....the culmination of our lives and to be here with people who have become our family is a privilege beyond compare. So,I understand deeply, in my soul, what this house means to him. WHat a wonderful thing to have achieved....and the indoor, outdoor esthetic is such a happy way to live at one with nature...a paradise!
