Lovely photography. I’m in the North West. Not so much noise but lots of flashes. Went on for a good few hours. I was expecting more of those cracks and sudden detonator type bangs but that didn’t happen. In 1967 I was on holiday in Cornwall and was told when I got home that there had been a terrific storm, so bad that all the lights were on in the road and people up making cups of tea. They said it was like the second world war and very frightening. Does anyone remember that?

Not atypical in the U.K. What has changed over the last 50 years is that thunderstorms are less frequent than they used to be. When they do occur, people take more notice of them nowadays. (Is it possible changes in cloud patterns - particularly in the south east of England can be correlated with a massive increase in high altitude jet flights in the same period? Is there a causal link? Has anybody investigated this?) I remember quite clearly that during the 1960’s and early 1970’s that most hot summer days caused cloud build up that resulted in overnight thunderstorms. This used to be a regularly occurring pattern. This effect was exploited by glider pilots at Wycombe air park who used to “ride” summer storms building up over the chiltern hills to set world records for glider height attainment and rate of climb. This regular summer pattern of warm days and thunderstorms has been replaced by long summers of hot but cloudy days. Occasionally, we have hot clear summer days, and when we do, they are very hot (possibly hotter than similar days in the 1960s). All of this seemed to change not long after wide body transatlantic jets came into being the number of which has multiplied over the last 40 years. Each one of these aircraft spews out enormous amounts of carbon dioxide and water vapour. What are the effects of pouring millions of tons of 600 degrees centigrade (or so) of carbon dioxide and steam into a very cold, thin upper atmosphere way above the level of normal weather? Have have the effects of this been properly considered, measured and modelled by meteorologists and climate scientists?)

I'm from Walsall, started about 1:30 til 4:00. I was up watching it too last night, I just couldn't sleep. It was quite a show. I have seen this kind of thing in the Caribbean a few times but only once before in the UK. It was around 2000 /2001 and we were just packing up after a gig in Stafford. We had to stop and take shelter because the lightening was none stop, but that one was on top of us with constant ground strikes and sounded like a war zone. Last night was weird though because most of it was silent but still constant and all around - how does that work?.

It initially started with sheet lightning and loud claps of thunder, but the storm gathered pace and then I noted that there was little or no thunder, despite the storm being overhead. It was awesome I live in haydock about 10 miles of so from Salford one way and Liverpool the other and some of the thunder was so loud I wanted to shout out in excitement but didn't want to disturb the wife even more

Oddly enough it wasn’t any cooler after the storm. I couldn’t sleep because of this sticky heat.

I'm in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, the thunder started about 3am here but we had lightning before that too, loudest boom was 3.07 and made my jump out of my skin, it was loud enough to wake many people up

Leeds here, the boom was absolutely unbelievable, sounded like a bomb had gone off, most beautiful storm I have ever seen, added benefit of a clean car this morning also, the rain was stronger and more consistent than most car washes!
