No music, no inane commentary. What an excellent animation. Really helped me to visualise the whole expedition. Next time you see the speck of Mars in the night sky just imagine that this machine is there and working away as you look at it. . For once we can truly say "awesome". It really is.

Obviously, this is an animated video, but you have to give it up to science and NASA for making this happen. The Mars Curiosity mission is an ongoing testament to human ingenuity. It's nice to see technology being used for something other than killing people in the Middle East. Thumbs up on the video btw.

I don't even want to think about how many lines of computer it code it takes to launch, land, and operate the Curiosity Rover.
@HamzehMalkawi1
9 жыл бұрын
500,000 lines of code, actually, according to JPL.
@HamzehMalkawi1
9 жыл бұрын
Osirise81 I don't know code, I'm just referencing what JPL says. A few hypotheses I can make as to why an atmospheric plane needs orders of magnitude more lines of code than a planetary rover is that there are far more variables traveling through a thick atmosphere than (I'm guessing there would be) in interplanetary space. JPL's 500k estimate could just be specifically for the EDL (entry, descent, landing) portion of its mission, affectionately referred to by EDL engineers as "7 Minutes Of Terror".
@HamzehMalkawi1
9 жыл бұрын
Osirise81 Simplifying the code as much as possible is definitely important, because when you're in space, or on another planet, anything that goes wrong with the code could mean the end of the mission; game over. Whereas even on a high-tech plane, if the code goes wrong, you can override to manual controls and guide it to safety and repair it. Journey to the Moon, however, the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) was a 70 lb hunk of metal that had the capacity and power comparable to that of a modern pocket calculator.

I'm wondering that they sent many rovers to mars but why dont they send at least 1 land rover to the moon? and it costs much less than mars .
@Kimballgoss

It's difference in cost is actually minimal. Once your in orbit around earth, %80 of the work is already done. Plus we've already been to the moon quite a few times. (And there's already a rover there :P)
@michaelmckeever2734
8 жыл бұрын
+star_light There's several rovers on the Moon and we're not the only country with rovers there. Mars has more to offer us in terms of science and the pursuit of life outside of our planet. The rovers are seeking out evidence that life may and may-have existed on Mars. We know the Moon is a dead planet and there's little to gain from sending rovers there.
@BoarhideGaming

+star_light Like the others said, the moon is a dead, cold rock in space, while Mars has an atmosphere, has water, has all the basic buildings blocks that are needed to sustain life. Mars will be the first planet we terraform and colonize, if we don't blow ourselves up beforehand

The animation here is overwhelming, but what makes it for me is the audio tracks. As a sound designer, I have to tell you this person knows what they are doing. A slight bit of delay, use of the stereo field and knowing when to slightly fade ion sound that in reality wouldn't give this a cinematic quality that keeps us entertained and focused on what would otherwise be some pretty boring stuff after awhile.

I'm not sure what metals they use to create the rovers. However, as there is no oxygen or liquid water, the robots are free from the danger of rust. The biggest obstacle for the design of the robot is the solar panels. Mars is very windy and dusty, the solar panels on the rovers get dirty very quickly. This is why Curiousity uses P238. The rovers transmit the images/results of experiments back to Earth. I believe it takes less than 15 minutes for Curiousity to send information back to us.

I say it's unbelievable what our technology can do, as we all know Curiosity was able to be manipulated from earth! Yet, if E.T.'s exist, (and I believe they do), even if they're only thousands of years ahead of our civilization, imagine what their technology can do. It's frightening to think about. We could never catch up, although some believe we had their help to get this far. Who knows? It's still a beautiful video of what earthlings are able to do as of today.
This is too good to be true, amazing what humans can achieve if they work together, 2.6 Billion is a small price to pay for the rewards this may bring...

And now Curiosity has discovered many things, such as an area where an aggressive stream of water used to flow. We know this because the pictures of the rocks the rover has sent us has water marks and signs of erosion.
