Once upon a time when we lived in the country when my Dad was logging and my mom was anything that needed to be done and a wife she loved persimmon's and would stand at the trees to eat them, she would then bake a bread using them (on the lines of banana bread) which we had as toast in am or even as a treat at night. Try googling for a recipe for persimmon bread. You live it!

@@ikeshia1981 I think it probably depends on how ripe they are. If they aren't ripe enough they don't really taste like anything I find, but when they are ripe they are the perfect sweetness. This time of year is the only time they're in grocery stores here, but I live in Ontario, Canada, so I'm not sure about Texas! But definitely try them if you find them! 🙃

Persimmons are extremely delicious & everyone needs to try some! If they are available where you live- buy the one that looks like a slightly squashed down tomato (the Fuyu-asian) very orange & still firm (like a 'green' tomato just about to turn red in your hand) it will taste like a cinnamon-spiced peach with a hint of pumpkin. If you buy the 'American' it is VERY BITTER to eat raw- it is not pleasant! I have no idea why James described it as a cucumber taste unless the hybrid has lost all its original flavor in favor of a compromise. They are about 60 cents each in stores here (likely Meijer & Kroger, for sure, but i am not sure whatever other supermarkets in various locations)

It's my understanding that they are traditionally pressed and dehydrated to preserve. I have a family member that works for Mitsubishi Electric... she has connections... 😉. You can try this... Dehydrate them like an apricot and cut them into supper tiny little cubes, then mix with sweetened coconut flakes (about 1 part persimmon to 3 parts coconut) then add enough sweetened condensed milk to hold the mixture together into a ball. You then roll the sticky 1" balls in a crushed walnut or pecan and refrigerate. They are my kids favorite Christmas treat. You can substitute papaya or apricot in a pinch. Hope this helps you get some longer life out of your harvest. 💚

Persimmons and paw paws- that's exactly what I thought. Last fall I planted a Meader persimmon and a serviceberry, thinking they could mostly look after themselves. I attempted to plant paw paws a few years earlier, from free seedlings, but they didn't take. Now I find one seed planted itself and next fall I'll be planting another paw paw (from a nursery) for the cross pollination. They are a bit needier than the persimmon and serviceberry, but I'm gradually stepping up.

Just an FYI, the "Asian" Persimmons have hundreds, if not thousands of varieties and they are both astringent and nonastringent, or rather less astringent as all of the fruits have tannins, which is what causes the mouth puckering sensation, just like grapes (especially red wine grapes, which is why some people get headaches after drinking red wine but don't after drinking rosé or white wines), and Wikipedia actually states that there is a third lesser known category and it states the following: "There is a third type, less commonly available, the pollination-variant non-astringent persimmons. When fully pollinated, the flesh of these fruit is brown inside-known as goma in Japan-and the fruit can be eaten when firm. These varieties are highly sought after. Tsurunoko, sold as "chocolate persimmon" for its dark brown flesh, Maru, sold as "cinnamon persimmon" for its spicy flavor, and Hyakume, sold as "brown sugar", are the three best known." Persimmons have seeds only if they have been pollinated, so it has nothing to do with the variety. The same tree could produce fruits with seeds one year and without the next or a mix of fruits with and without seeds the same year provided that not all of the flowers were pollinated. The scientific name also does not mean divine as is commonly thought, but rather dio is an affix assigned to plants and the word persimmon is derived from the Native American language of Powhatan, which is an Algonquian language. Kaki is the Japanese term for the fruit and commonly used in other countries as well. I am a new subscriber and have been enjoying your videos and your enthusiasm!!! Little Tuck is absolutely ADORABLE!!!!! Keep up the great work!!!

Jesus Christ saves from sin. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Romans 10:9-10. That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 1John 5: 10-13 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. ......

Was that a seed in the Nikita's Gift? If it is, I suggest you try sprouting it. A few years back when I was at a One Green World nursery orchard tour, the manager of the nursery, on learning I had an American Persimmon, and was planning to plant both Asian and hybrid persimmons, asked me to save any seeds if my Asian or hybrid produced any. She wanted them because natural persimmon hybrids are rare, and their viable seeds are rare, but she wanted more seeds to grow out in the interest of developing more varieties. If the black spot in the center of the ripe persimmon you cut is a seed, it would be well worth trying to grow it.

The local store does carry hachiyas and some of them are even ripe enough to eat as soon as they get home. I put two unripe ones inside a paper bag and the first one was ready to eat in around a week. The second one is just about there but now it has company in two more hachiyas. I'm not big on hard fuyus because I don't care for the skin all that much, and I remembered the first couple of times I got fuyus, they took FOREVER to ripen so I decided to put the dozen or so fuyus I've gotten this year in the freezer. Now when I want one, I drop it in boiling water for ten seconds or so, slice it in half, remove the skin, and enjoy while the fruit is still ice cold inside. They'e absolutely delicious this way and I even got the niece and nephew eating them frozen. Unfortunately, this can't be done with astringent varieties or I'd be stashing those in the freezer too.

It's like a sweet jelly or jam. If you think healthful foods aren't as good as processed ones, it's because there's lots of donuts in the modern world, but not lots of places to swing in and pick up some ripe persimmons. Although it's a lot easier to grow a tree (it grows itself) than it is to have all the agriculture and industrial apparatus to make donuts. The modern world has betrayed us - we need to embrace the real / natural world and when we realize that not only is it good for us and every other person and creature on the earth and future generations, but we get to eat jelly and save money, and that it's easy to do then we'll all do it or some variation that suits our tastes or climate better. Imagine if all your neighbors were doing this to the extent James was. First you and your kids could walk outside and eat things far better than you could get in a store at any price. And you could do it much of the year. You'd also start eating seasonally. And be really happy, healthy, and financially secure. Let's do this, indeed. Let's go, baby.

Back in the eighties I rented a house in Fallbrook,CA for a year that had a 20 foot persimmon tree. I don’t know if it was Asian or American but when it ripened it hat the redest persimmon fruit I have ever seen. I made the mistake of planting the American kind next to our house. It's approaching the same height now which wouldn't be that big of an issue but the local Raccoons have been taking a lot of interest in it. Doing research, apparently Raccoons are the main way the seeds to these trees get dispersed. For the past month or so we've had two of them up in the tree trying to get at the fruit on weaker and weaker branches. Pretty much the whole middle of the tree is free of all small limbs, talk about natural pruning. I don't want them up on the roof of our house so I think I'll be getting rid of it but this smaller variety looks more appropriate for our yard. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
