You would benefit from having an experienced mineral collector, or even a chemist, with you. I am both (but am not volunteering!) What you thought was pyromorphite isn’t. It is melanterite. Chemically it is ferrous sulfate, the initial oxidation product of iron sulfide minerals (usually pyrite and marcasite). It soon oxidises further to ferric sulfate, which rapidly hydrolyses and precipitates hydrated ferric oxides - that ochreous yellow goo you waded through. It is also water soluble, which is why you don’t see it very often. It will only form in the drier areas. So, what you found was a transient intermediate in the formation of the ochre that is so abundant in old mines. The other product of the hydrolysis of ferric sulfate is sulfuric acid, so expect the water to be a little acidic! It would be nice to see some more of the minerals the miners sought. Most of the videos show only the post-mining coatings. Seeing yet more ochre stalactites, and pools of orange goo, gets a bit repetitive. I am used to the Pennines mines where the veins are prominent, and crystal-lined vugs common. Ever see the like in the Welsh mines? It would be nice to see some examples. And if you want to see real pyromorphite, there is at least one Welsh mine famous for it - Bwlch Glas.

The pink is cobalt bloom erythrite the orange gloop is limonite slurry
@DrSteve660
2 жыл бұрын
You are right about the orange gloop, but I am unconvinced by the erythrite. Iron oxides can take on a variety of hues; orange, yellow and brown being most common, but I have seen them with distinctly pinkish hues too. Erythrite is often a particularly vivid, in your face, pink. What they found didn’t look as vivid. Having said that, traces of cobalt are known from Welsh mines, so it is not outside the realms of possibility. I’d need to see it in good, natural light. The “pyromorphite” was actually melanterite, something that would be immediately obvious to an experienced mineral collector. I am surprised they got that one so wrong.

The crystals you found are Melanterite, a form of iron II sulfate
@antaron6
3 жыл бұрын
Welcome back guys, another interesting video. I am guessing limonite (yellow ochre) for the yellow stuff, iron sulphate for the green stuff and goethite/haematite for the brown/red stuff. All products of pyrite oxidation. The yellow splashes could be the result of loose rock dropping from the back into the sludge over time!
@DrSteve660

So gypsum is Calcium Sulfate, so it is easily believable that the level would have high concentrations of sulfur. Edit: Galena is also lead sulfide... so more evidence of lots of sulfur. Edit: pyromorphite is only found in shades of green, yellow and brown... I would suspect that what you found is aurichalsite. TO BE CLEAR: this is not intended to be derogatory or as any sort of criticism of you. Mistakes happen, especially when identifying uncommon minerals in the field.
