I just happened upon your channel and watched your video testing the new hatches and splitting mauls you received from Italy. I'm writing this at 2am. on veterans day and you made me think of my son who is now living in Italy. As a Blackhawk pilot serving in Bosnia & Iraq he went through several survival training schools. He said if you could only have ONE tool or weapon to depend upon, a sharp axe or hatchet was preferred over all other equipment. If you choose me to receive your gift axe I would choose the fourth one of the selection on your video as I think it was the best all around axe and would exceed all my son's expectations. Whether I win or not I enjoyed your video and am a new subscriber whom will learn a great deal from future episodes. Thanks, from Roger Engel.

I've lit a lot of fires with my Western! I sharpened one for someone else, looked up the brand in the forums, and fell in love. Had to have one. Found one from the fifties, still made in Boulder, CO. I just love it. I put a convex edge on it, like an old Marbles knife. Finding one with the sheath in good condition is either rare or expensive. I had to sew my own. You'll love it it you keep it, and if you give it away, it will be treasured.

You looked like a kid at Christmas!! I love it. It reminded me of the time I got two footlockers full of tools that my Great Uncle Grover left to my Dad. Dad used some of them, like the handsaws, but he never used all the tools. He left them to me, and I was like a kid in a candy factory! Planes, saws, augers, gimlets, draw knives, you name it, and it was probably in there. Uncle Grover used them to make his living.. I use most of them in my shop now. Along with a few hand-planes from my Great-Grand father that he used to make coffins. Nice going, Cody.

Cody, that is a pounce wheel, also known as a tracing wheel. Pouncing is an art technique used for transferring an image from one surface to another. It is similar to tracing, and is useful for creating copies of a sketch outline to produce finished works. Pouncing has been a common technique for centuries, used to create copies of portraits and other works that would be finished as oil paintings, engravings, and so on. The most common method involves laying semi-transparent paper over the original image, then tracing along the lines of the image by creating pricked marks on the top sheet of paper. This pounced drawing made of pricked holes is laid over a new working surface. A powder such as chalk, graphite or pastel is forced through the holes to leave an outline on the working surface below, thus transferring the image. The powder is applied by being placed into a small bag of thin fabric such as cheesecloth, then dabbed onto the pricked holes of the pounced drawing.

I believe the handle with spiked wheel is called a "Ponce Wheel." Use it on all sorts of soft materials to mark a pattern. Used one in H.S. to trace a pattern on stencil paper, then used a powdered chalk bag to tap over the pattern and transfer to wood, etc. For sign lettering.

Tool at 16:30 is very common for seamstress. You place a piece of 'carbon paper' (several color are available) and you trace a line that is visible enough to do you cutting or stitching but not strong enough to damage the fabric. Nice video, thanks.

The little drill bit things are called Gimlets, they are or were used to make pilot holes for screws. A full set usually covered screw sizes #2 through #9. If the square is an expensive one at the time it will have two small screws in the bottom of the handle used to adjust the square when it goes out of square.

Robert Sullivan The cutting edges are on opposite sides as well. The normal lateral forces when operating scissors are supposed to press the blades together. If you use scissors made for the other hand, the natural motion spreads the blades apart instead. You can easily see this in those simple grade-school scissors with the round holes that do not have the tapered surfaces so are supposed to be either left or right handed. A left handed person can you them with some practice but the hand quickly fatigues due to the unnatural motions needed to force the blades together instead of apart.
