The scabbard chisel or saya nomi (Japanese scabbard chisel) is a unique tool used by Japanese craftsmen in the making of Japanese sword scabbards. Unlike normal chisels, the saya chisel features a rounded belly and a bent handle, making it perfect for chiseling channels into wood. While this tool is obviously intended for a very specific purpose, it's amazingly versatile and can be used in making handles for knives, as well as for a host of general woodworking tasks. Blade smith Walter Sorrells walks you through the making of this tool, which includes forging the steel and then turning wooden handles on a lathe.
