I thought his concern was more about whether it might be offensive to them, not that he was doing something unethical by his own standards. I think the answer to that would depend a lot on the denomination and congregation - how liberal, what the culture is like. If he hadn't mentioned it on the internet, I'd figure, how would they even know? Therefore unlikely to be seen as offensive. But having now mentioned it, it probably also depends on which people there know he's a youtuber and whether they watch this.

The difference in the reaction to Elyse not showering as opposed to Amber is that Elyse was talking about depression, and most of us can relate to that emptiness, personal hygiene is the first thing to go. I don't think people care really about the "does she shower or not debate" it is about her trying to cover up her previous embarrassment and overcompensating. She has to prove to everyone that she loves to shower and she does it daily, sometimes multiple times a day because she said herself she couldn't shower at her heaviest. Then other ex's talked about her not showering too. If she was blunt and said "in the past I had an issue with showering but I have worked on it and I push myself to do it daily now/ have grown to enjoy it." majority of people would give her credit and drop it. She just always tries to erase information about herself from the past and act like what she is doing now is how it has always been and everyone else is crazy for pointing out that she is putting in the clips for reasons separate from just "enjoying showering."

In my early 20s, my mother and grandparents suddenly went all in for church and after a sort of divorce from my mother (threw me out because that was easier than divorcing her POS now ex-husband), I lived with my grandparents for a few years and they forced me to go to their Southern Baptist church every Sunday, basically in lieu of rent. It’s not just that, there’s a lot of shady things she’s done and said when you really get into it. She lies to and manipulates her viewers a lot, has adult tantrums, she’s an animal abuser, she’s emotionally abused and taken advantage of multiple past girlfriends, and she won’t seek the help of medical professionals even when people plead with her and try to explain how important it is. I’m not necessarily a hater or airing her whole story out or anything (these are all things that are her words or what she herself has shown), just knowledgeable about it and wary about what she tries to tell people now. If you want to know more about her, a great analogy channel is OhLordyItsJordy. I love his commentary on Amber and other creators because he has really great discussions about important topics, and he tries to understand the motives behind the choices that these people make and why they are the way they are. His older videos are where you can see it the best, back when she was dating Becky and Destiny.

I LOVED this video, John. I feel the same way about Chantal, who I have not followed for more than a year, maybe. There are so many awful things happening on the world right now, the possibility of a Third World War, the horror of what is happening to innocent people on both sides in the Middle East, do we really care if Amber showers every day? Do we have to be afraid to say religion can be good for certain people who need support and forgiveness if they have hurt themselves or their family by their weaknesses? You speak your truth. Our lives are not better if we attack all religion or weak people like Amber and Chantal who need help. Do better for yourself, be charitable, be kind, be firm when you have to be not to enable them, but give them a hand when they need and deserve it.

So, I grew up Pentecostal/First Assemblies of God and have a LOOOOTTT of religious trauma, especially since my mom and step dad were pastors. To top it all off, (God is funny for this) I’m gay!!! As soon as I left my house I became a deconstructed Christian. I believed in God and Jesus is Lord and died for my sins, but I questioned everything. I struggled a lot with my sexuality even after leaving the church, but thankfully ended meeting my now husband who was very understanding. When we had our son, my husband, who was agnostic at the time, decided he wanted to try to go to church just so our son would have good morals and a sense of community. He knew I had anxiety when it came to church, so he gave me the option to go and I did and I’m glad I did! The church we attended was a nondenominational church and very much straight from Bible. There weren’t any theatrics, no crazy worship service with people screaming and falling to the ground, only a few good songs and sermons that are easy to follow and understand. I learned about Bible apologetics and made a complete 180. I’m very much involved with my church now and have a relationship with God I never knew I would have. I use my sexuality as a testimony and my goal is to help others who struggle with their sexuality as well! I hated myself for so long and begged God to take my “gayness” away or “pray the gay away.” I always thought I was broken and I’d never be “fixed” because no matter how much I prayed, I still had attraction to women. I eventually realized, God made me this way. Now, I just want to be there for those who are in the same boat as me and help them learn to love themselves and remind them how much God loves them. If you told me 4 years ago that I would be where I am right now, I would’ve laughed in your face and told you to gtfo lol. But yeah. All to say, it’s really cool that you’re helping your friend out with his church despite you deconstructing and questioning your faith. It took me taking a step back from the church for a few years for me to come back to it and experience joy that I ever have never experienced before.

I do think there are times you're a little soft on her and that it's not always helpful to glaze over the problematic elements the way you sometimes do, but the showering thing is fing stupid. People act like showering is the be-all-end-all for cleanliness. I have a sensitive facial nerve that can be aggravated/activated by the pounding hot water. Will it activate every time? No. CAN it? Yeah, and the consequences suck, and between that and a pre-existing dislike of showers, I tend to avoid them. Nobody would ever know because while it's less convenient and takes longer, it's easy to get just as clean -- if not cleaner -- by scrubbing yourself down with the help of a sink. Hair, same, just need a farmhouse sink + arching faucet. Also? Most people just do not need to shower as often as they do. Your skin has a natural moisture barrier and really dislikes the constant onslaught. tldr people just in general need to chill about showers.

Honestly I think the main reason there’s such a difference in the reaction to each video is because in their minds, ALR did this to herself through eating whereas the other girl has depression that she didn’t do anything to cause. People seem to think ALR has caused her depression through her weight rather than the other way around. It could also be that in the second video the woman is showing that she is going to shower anyway, isn’t going to complain about it (just share a relatable moment that a lot of depressed people feel) and understands that it will help her mood, therefore people are more inclined to encourage that action.

There was one point where Amberlynn claimed she has BPD, and based off her online presance and her ex's accounts I wouldnt be surprised. It would also explain her being a serial dater and her relationships moving so fast. If shes not doing anything to improve her symptoms then shes gonna be very attached very quickly, do whatever she feels she needs to to keep a partner there, and it would explain her manipulative tendancies. Idc if someone thinks Im being ableist by saying untreated BPD can make u manipulative, if u havent had someone close to u leave thier BPD untreated u have no idea how difficult it is to watch someone constantly spiral and pull u in with them

The gorls universe have genuine criticisms but all those criticisms are the same old things again and again because Amberlynn, Chantal and the likes are repeating their cycles again and again. There is no changes or improvements. So it's understandable that people latch onto little things like that and nitpick to change up once in a while because that's the only "new" thing to talk about. Sure, she could be going through something that prevents her from showering but she didn't have to film herself like this to show she showered. Don't for a second think that Amberlynn didn't plan it ,she knew she would have people talking about her. She could be very calculative sometimes. Everything people say about her are based on the things she has said, the actions she has done and the behaviours she has displayed; people aren't embellishing or blowing things out of proportions.
