Ambient occlusion is good when well applied, actually no one game applies it realistically, it's like a reshade filter that puts black circles and borders around vertexes. It doesn't exists in real life. The best thing is disable it, and save extra perfomance and vram.

HBAO+ combined with high res textures and tessellation equals awesome! Add 3D Vision and DSR to that and you have my gaming experience on PC for the last...many years. Sweet experiences for sure!

Also don't confuse AO with specular mapping and occlusion, it's totally separate thing, but still in the genre of "lighting" at least. It's what gives materials their shine and reflections of light on rough surfaces.

In Resident Evi 2 Remake, Claire Costume Bicker mod, matters with Ambient Occlusion turned on to HBAO+ which makes all the metal studs on her costume twinkle like diamonds.

Rise of the Tomb Raider does not run on Unreal Engine 4. It uses an in-house engine built by Crystal Dynamics.

First of all, ROTTR isn't made on UE4. Second, Ground Truth Ambient Occlusion or GTAO is probably the best method yet. It's based on HBAO but has increased sample count like HBAO+ but the results are more similar to VXAO since it accounts for multiple other factors that HBAO+ doesn't, making it practically the best solution yet, while in most cases running faster than HBAO+ but still slightly slower than SSAO, as seen in some games that use it such as COD WW2.

I'm really new to this so can I ask if it's ok to set the ambient occlusion to quality on my NVIDIA control panel or should I just leave it to off and just manage pre in-game setting? Hope you would notice this. Thanks and God bless, sir. ^^

Ambient occlusion adds almost edge detecting like shadows to many objects and I'm not a big fan of any of it. I feel it's horrendously overdone in games these days and 3Dfies things which actually should have been flat. Looking forward to something better in the future. Just look at the Far Cries, some objects are virtually floating in these fake new shadow edges they've been given and don't seem to be in contact with whatever surface they are resting on at all.

There's not anything to explain really. Higher settings just use higher resolution textures. No need to waste time in a video explaining that one.

Felix Hasal As long as you have 4 GB of VRAM on your graphics card, then you should be able to set texture quality to High in most games and it won’t have any performance impact.

Washington Neto uhhh The og Crysis used Parallax Occlusion Mapping. Tesselation wasnt a thing until Crysis 2 on DX11

Ambient occlusion is way too strong in near every game. Things don't become completely black in the corners.

Is it just me? i had alot of trouble finding the difference between the first 2 sets of pics you put up do demonstrate ambient occlusion\ Again the pics to demonstrate hdao I could not find any notable difference Same thing with the HBAO...nothing why?

Well this is just plain wrong, tomb raider isn't unreal, hbao isnt just more samples. Ao is self shadowing approximatiin based on depth maps. Fail
