We're killing two birds with one stone in this video as we get to the much needed cleaning process on our AMC 360 donor motor and discuss the updated information on our AMC 304 we currently have sitting at the machine shop. Unfortunately it's not all good news and decisions have to really start being made. So here we go, lots to talk about!
First off, in previous videos you all have seen me salvage this 360 AMC motor from a 1973 AMC Ambassador which had been pretty well picked clean before I got there. Fortunately for ME not only was the engine intact but it didn't appear to have have really been modified other than a 4 barrel Edelbrock Performer AMC intake manifold paired with an Edelbrock 4 barrel carburetor. Years of disgusting were caked all over this thing so after disassembly we put the block/crank/steel parts in the acid bath hot tank and the aluminum parts got some walnut blasting then a final cleaning in the "shower".
With everything now cleaned up we can have an honest decision on the state of all our pieces and parts, start to make a true plan as to what we are going to need. 360 build vs 304 build is still in the cards here despite some expensive news from the machine shop making the 304 AMC V8 get a tad more out of the hoped for price range. BUT, it still could be a semi "budget build 304" ... our budget just has to get a bit bigger than we had hoped.
The 360 actually turns out pretty good for the most part, as a more complete engine build we were going into the Project 360 with an understanding there would be a LOT of things we would need to buy and costs beyond just clean it and bolt it back other. However it IS time to start making some decisions, first off AMC Cast Iron heads or Edelbrock Aluminum heads is a BIG one!
What are we building these motors for? Well, if you haven't paid attention to the build series one or possibly BOTH are meant for our 1979 AMC Spirit AMX destined for vintage road racing. Originally this particular 79 AMX came with a 304 V8, paired to a 4 speed manual transmission, basically the last gasp of AMC sports cars. So there IS a interesting case to be made for making it live again with the 304.
