That was pretty interesting although I stopped going to swap-meets as I could usually find something I really wanted but didn't have the budget (which can be pretty depressing 😮💨. I'm not a Harley person since an early 90's tried to kill me , the hydraulic brakes were terrible, no feel, 'wooden' and probably a bad move test riding it after a Ducati 916 😅 (I was running a workshop back then) The Greeves should have had an Albion gearbox. Gold Flash is PLUNGER not sprung hub (I've got a 1952) They came with single or duplex primary drive, duplex was for sidecar use. It's also what is called semi-unit with gearbox bolted to rear of crankcase. I'm kinda the CB360 'expert' it's difficult to believe they have increased in price so much over the last 20 years. That one you showed was in pretty good shape with original exhausts which are usually rotted out internally
@bullpencycles

Tell me the difference between a sprung hub and a plunger. I pretty much thought they were mostly the same. I can learn something!
@1crazypj
Жыл бұрын
@@bullpencycles Sprung hub was used by Triumph and had 'everything' (springs, guides, etc) inside the oversized rear hub. I've never worked on one but have seen the diagrams and apparently it's a pain to work on and never actually worked very well plus wore out pretty quick but didn't need a frame re-design I forget if they took a curved path or were straight up and down, haven't looked at instructions for about 40 years. Plunger suspension is much simpler to make and see how it works as it's external built into rear of frame. It has issues with chain tension (chain gets tighter at top of travel and is loose where you mostly use it) but assembly is much easier. Plunger also relies of the axle to keep things lined up, in the 70's, AMEN 'Savior' frames used guide blocks to help prevent wheel twisting quite so much but early BSA frames didn't use guides so handling could get 'interesting' if things were not tightened up/adjusted. It was still way better than a worn Triumph sprung hub though.

The old rigid framed BSA A7 from 1949 were so beautiful and are as rare as hens teeth now but are in my opinion the most beautiful looking bike ever made. Well worth buying one if you find one

I dont have the budget now. I sadly got married and got rid of a BSA A7 Rigid framed bike that was in very rough condition and a large journal crankshaft DA10 motor with single carb alloy head, firebird scrambler tank, BTH competition magneto, new high level exhaust, thick flange barrels, and other restored stuff, engine was polished and frame, petrol tank and oil tank and swinhg arm was sand blasted, filled and resprayed in two pack paint by myself. I did polishing, welding professionally and some precision engineering and painting but moved to Switzerland for 7 years when i got married and couldnt keep it. I still cry when i think of that. Its not the value but the time it took to find those rare BSA parts and the weeks of work i put into it. It was the first bike of over 250cc i bought at 20 years old and im 62 now. You could ride up to 250cc in the uk until 1983 as a learner but kids were buying 2 stroke yams, suzukis and kawasakis that could be tuned to do over 100mph but handled like shopping trolleys and didnt stop well on those awful drum and if you was lucky early disc brakes.

@@notwocdivad Now you've got me wondering. I don't claim to be an expert on these. I rarely see any Cottons in the USA, So I'm reading about Cotton's Telstar roadracer, but it also says that model used the Villier's Starracer engine, at least it says that on this Bonham's auction site. www.bonhams.com/auctions/15321/lot/463/ Then, if you look at the 2nd video of this Oley series, there is an AJS. I have to watch both of my videos again, to compare the Cotton engine with the AJS, because they lookd like the same motor in each, and I frankly don't know without looking.

Hi Again, on reading I could find no record of a VILLIERS STAR RACER engine There was a STAR MAKER used in trials and road racing and you were correct this engine was later used in Fluff Brown's AJS bikes.
