Rather not, AMD discontinued Driver Support in 2015, if you can get one extremely cheap, ok but when not, better get a GCN-based card (HD 7730 and higher/newer).

@commandercasey Please check out my video on NCIXcom about the "binning" process. Hopefully that will help improve your understanding of what's going on here. This is actually an entirely risk-free procedure. You flip the BIOS switch, flash it, and test. If you run into any problems you turn the computer off, fire it up with the stock BIOS and no harm done. You'd be a "Stupid Canadian" if you DIDN'T try it ;)

MAKE SURE YOU GET A REFERENCE VERSION CARD!!! A reference version, for those who don't know, is a card that DOESN'T have custom coolers/shrouds. The reason to make sure you get a reference version is because the NON REFRENCE VERSIONS do NOT HAVE BIOS SWITCHES!

When doing this please keep in mind that AMD probably had good reason selling these GPUs as HD6950s rather than HD6970s. So results may vary and are in no way guaranteed. For example, your unlocked HD6970 will probably not reach the same clockspeeds as "real" HD6970s and may use more power. The HD6950s also use slower RAM-chips than the HD6970s which will limit clockspeeds even further. Some chips might have downright broken shaders and show artifacts when unlocked. Please keep this in mind.
I remember getting 2 of these to unlock to 6970 :D

@1spaghetti32 That's just what I was writing to someone else. The 6970 has higher spec ram and flashing to a normally clocked 6970 bios could cause long term reliability with the card. What I may do myself is only unlock the shaders which should not be a problem while doing only a modest overclock otherwise. There's a reason after all that the 6970 has an 8 pin connector on it. The chips need to draw more power.
@Ben7seven7
13 жыл бұрын
@fuggotry from what I head the physical memory on the 6970 is higher spec than that of a 6950. So while the unlock may work to open up the shaders there can be issues in terms of memory frequency bumps to match the 6970 speed it may cause problems for you in the long term reliability of your card. I got 2 of these cards on orders. I think I may do a manual unlock just on the shaders but leave the memory speeds alone.
@WildLeghorn

possible but only with some compatible mobos & you won't exactly reach 6950 but very close to it! Extreme overclockers will be able to get almost 6950 performance out of a dual gpu with heatpipe design on a good 6870 brand. So first off you need to get a dual fan 6870 which has copper heat pipes! The AMD 6870 HAWK TwinFrozr 3 is the best one for that

To clear some air as I still see people asking questions about this: 1. You can do this with CF/Trifire, no limits there 2. You don't "NEED" a reference card, the only reason why everyone recommends it is because of its BIOS switch, that lets you reset it back to the 6950 standard bios if you encounter problems with your new 6970 flash. 3. Any 2GB card can be unlocked 4. This requires half-decent air flow, if you have bad air circulation or your temperatures are generally hot, don't do this.

@arktnas if you plan to do Crossfire manufacturer dosen't matter. but you have to have the same amout of memory on same speeds, and the chip must be identical, they both do need to run on the same clocks. You an however underclock/overclock ur cards if they are factory overclocked. But if you have unlocked only one card but not the other u wont be able to do Crossfire. both need to be unlocked or then you can possibly undo the unlocking. Gimme the specs on ur cards (name etc.) thanks.

@eckos20 6950 is better than gtx560 as default, but the point is that I've heard, actually read, issues about flash-unlocking of power consumption not enough to feed the card, artifacts generation and videocard dying. I'll probably keep them as they are or just overclock will be fine enough, even because if you don't watercool their going to be louder. Maybe someone should care of reporting Part Numbers of the 6950's flashed survivors and the temperatures they run at.

I don't want to go all pedantic on you, but referring to this as a BIOS flash is just wrong. It's a firmware update. Sure it has in common with BIOS that configuration parameters are stored on CMOS, but it is not a Basic Input Output System - which it could only be if the card was a complete computer with its own hardrives and other peripherals. I know this isn't down to you Linus, but comes direct from AMD. Still, it's an unprecedented departure from accepted nomenclature.

Now, XFX says i shouldn't use any 6pin to 8pin adapter but i really don't wanna buy a new Psu, So does NCIX have any dual molex to 8pin adapters or any other options i could do? @pivan23 How that hell is this going to make AMD go bankrupt. If anything people are going to buy 6950's like crazy soon to get this extra performance boost. After the new batch of cards hit the scene things will go back to normal. I think this was a great thing for AMD, as it's brought so much attention to them Sure the 6970 is going to suffer in sales for a couple more weeks but so what, the gtx 570 performs the same as the 6970 and is cheaper, so it wasn't the most appealing option.

I still wouldn't suggest buying a 6950 expecting to get a flawless 6970. If you were going to get a 6950 anyway, well then hell yeah, try this, free performance gain! However something could happen down the road (instability, driver issues, ect.) and you might have to go back to the 6950 settings, which after all, is what you are paying for. Don't buy a 6950 if you would be devastated if it did not perform flawlessly at the 6970 level.

Its not really worth the hassle and potential damage. I have both the 6950 and 6970. The difference in gaming performance is minute. @JosFcGamesta 2000mhz ram is no much faster than 1600mhz if you check reviews online, they are really not worth it, you'd get less benefits than 6950 unlocked vs 6970, also you will NEED to overclock the ram since the default is 1600 anyway. 2000mhz is just the ram's rated speed, but if you boot the PC chances are it runs at 1600 by default.
@supercritical100

@JosFcGamesta The reason why is because they run their unlocked 6950's MEMORY at 6970 speed 6950's memory is rated to run at 1250mhz MAX while 6970 can potentially run at 1500mhz with no ill effect(the card itself can't handle it most of time). Having 6950's memory running at 1375mhz for months is asking for it.

@riado4351 yes, works for any brand's reference card. if you get an error after flash the bios, simply just switch the bios pin to 2 position after turn off your computer, and restart it. then switch back to 1 bios, and flash it back to your original bios. that's why you have to always save your bios before doing any flashing stuff.

This is great and all but won't the changed 8 pin from the 6970 cause problems when you're under load (like playing games). @TheTester121 no, it isn't guaranteed because a 6950 needs two six pins, and 6970 has a 8 pin and 6 pin, and two 6 pins dont provide the power of a 8 and 6 pin. Also, if you screw up your first bios, AMD has a second bios which you could switch too, and everything will go back to normal

@MegaAbzzzzz The thing is that the cores are there all along. The 6950 cards are the 6970 cards that couldn't handle the higher clock (they where "broken"). So instead of throwing them away they downclocked them, turned of a few cores and sold them cheaper as the 6950

wow did you really only got 7-9 fps during the first graphic test? i would think with a videocard like the 6970 you would achieve higher framerates.. please tell me youre only running that test with only 2 gb ram... cause im about to buy that card and looking at the fps doesnt make me happy ;(

I think the ATI Radeon HD 6950 is the best option, you got two video cards there, why pay more for the 6970? I have the ATI Radeon HD 6950 flashed into 6970 and works exactly the same as the 6970, I don't even need to use it like that, just to use the 6950......... you know the rest.

@burninwftf44 The "unlocked" 6950s aren't true 6970s. So if you try to overclock to speeds that a real 6970 can handle may cause instability in the unlocked 6950. The only thing this method unlocks is the number of shaders, which have been limited by software by the manufacturer.

if you buy two radeon 6950s and flash them both to 6970 can you then run them in crossfire and it would be exactly like two 6970's? is the performance difference between the 6950 and 6970 'worth it' enough to justify possibly damaging the card with this bios flash?

@selyss12345 they test only a few chips out of a batch. If the batch is good they get labeled 6970 if the batch is bad they are called 6950's. That doesn't mean every chip in the batch is a bad, it just means they have a higher chance of failure at the 6970 settings.

This "transformation" decreases the lifetime of the board? force plate as if it were an overclock? or so and actually release the performance that was already there sorry for my english, I am Brazilian and I'm using google translator.

@mhaneline I will die laughing ...go get your facts right ....everything you told is incorrect .. ...go read reviews ....but i agree nvidia's driver are better but still ATI/AMD is better for me........ .....ATI is winner for me

@mhaneline still too expensive for the performance you get, i mean, 2 HD6850 in cf whips the gtx580 so bad it's not even funny, and 2 6850 is REALLY cheap. But i agree, nVidia improved some of the power consumption issues so that's awesome.

reference 6950s are no longer sold, so you cant unlock your future XFX 6950. Maybe u could, but with no dual bios switch, so if something goes wrong, ur screwed. Might as well get the 7850, better than the 6950 kind of and just barely mroe expensive

Idle temps - 7850 = 30c vs 6950 = 42c full load temps - 7850 = 65c vs 6950 = 79c Max Power consumption or TDP for the 6950 = 158 W vs 7850 = 106 W. You need a at least 500 watt power supple for either card! Hope this helps!!!
