Basically all UE5 titles that use raytracing so far use software RT (which is somewhat less precise, but runs relatively well on all hardware) rather than hardware RT (which requires significant hardware acceleration via RT cores/accelerators to perform well, but produces a better image). For this reason, the RT in those titles performs basically the same regardless of the card's branding. So basically as usual, if you like your RT performance and better upscaling options (DLSS), you might as well still go with an nvidia GPU. 4070 Super still seems like the better option in this scenario, even if it costs ~$50 more. AMD needs a feature that stands out that nvidia doesn't yet already do better aside from just rasterization performance. RT isn't a gimmick anymore, it's here to stay. I am rooting for AMD and intel to step it up though, and hopefully they do. It's better for all of us if they do.

30fps to 60fps it’s 50% more. 170 to 200fps it’s 15% difference. So you count percentage in fps vs percentage in price and you get the idea which card it’s better deal. It’s not confusing. It’s very simple concept.

I personally am really happy with my 4070Super over 1060 and 4060ti (16). I personally value the extra features but I'm not gonna lie, this is an actual argument for AMD. You wont get access to DLSS which is very unfortunate. But other than that this is a very competitive product. AMD needs to release more products like this if they want to stand a chance in the modern GPU market.
@corey2232

No DLSS sucks, but I might be willing to accept that if FSR 3 becomes more widely implemented. FSR isn't my favorite, but I can take a quality hit if I'm getting that good of performance for the cost.
@Kiyuja

I am using DLSS since the beginning of February and I can tell you it doesnt suck. Maybe you play at 1080p where upscalers dont do so well but at 1440p it definitely works well on Quality and Balanced. FSR 3 and Frame Gen are way more dodgy features but there is literally no downside to DLSS imo. Dunno what kind of copium you are sniffing but I literally went back and forth with FSR and DLSS and you have to be out of your mind to pick FSR over DLSS, you literally get better quality AND better FPS at the same quality settings. FSR 3 and Frame Gen need both to be implemented by the devs. You cannot mod FSR3 into a game that doesnt already support Frame Gen and vice versa.@@corey2232

I'd really like to see you guys do a PC for game console money build and testing. I've been primarily a console player for a number of years now because the costs just became too high. Is it possible to get console like quality and performance for the same amount of money right now? I'm just not sure. Sure these GPUs can pump out frame rates that double that of ps5 sometimes even triple. But the GPU alone costs as much as a PS5, no CPU, ram, PSU, motherboard, case or even a controller and mouse and keyboard. I just don't know what's possible and I think of anyone could make something that squeezes the most performance out of the fewest dollars it would be digital foundry.

The 3090 ages well in this regard however it’s really warm with RT going. Keep this in mind for 3090s with boor cooling on the backplate side as these have vram chips on both sides of the card but usually lack cooling on the back side.

I think AMD should have offered this card against the 4070 to begin with at $499 and they would have sold a lot more. AMD is trailing in 2 departments - RT Performance and Features and AI Upscaling. This card does bridge the RT performance gap slightly and FSR3 and XeSS help bridge the AI Upscaling gap. Rasterization performance is great but is almost irrelevant as folks buy these cards to run AI Upscaling and RT path tracing and Frame-gen and either try to hit resolutions over 1440p or max out settings. Unfortunately Nvidia is still superior in AI upscaling and RT and the $50 price difference of the 4070 Super is less significant when building a new gaming rig where the GPU will account for 30-40% of the overall cost.

@@Patrick-tw7nr Agreed, 16gb is better but no one buys a card today thinking of how it's going to run in 2-3 years, right? You can always drop resolution and up other settings. Looks like a great entry to 4K gaming. Sadly, while I do game on a 4K screen as well, my most frequent and most demanding use is VR. AMD has just had too many VR issues for me to stick with them. I went with a 4070 Ti Super instead, as I think it's the 4K (or 4128x2208 on the Quest 3) entry point from Nvidia (owing to the 256 bit bus and 16GB VRAM as much as the processing performance). Not exactly a value offering, although I did get one significantly below RRP. At least the most gimped AD103 still offers about 15% better raster performance than the most gimped Navi 31.

It can be assumed that so many of these video chips were made for the Chinese market that a lot remained unclaimed in warehouses, and it was decided to sell at cost, or with a meager margin. Such a move could both cover AMD's costs for the production of these chips, and become a good advertising move for the company in an environment where competition is extreme, and in fact the market belongs to one monopolist.
@ABaumstumpf

As long as AMDs raytracing breaks down performance as soon as any better effects are involved engines and games won't use it much and only go with the low quality effects. And any games that use those effects show a clear difference even if the ray tracing is very little and causes less than 10% reduction on nvidia.
