It's not twins and there’s no kidnapper. Actually, Ameia is the adoptive mom of the newborn with a dark coat.
If it’s twins, they must have been born apart. Because I saw Ameia holding A newborn, the bright-coat red-face one, on May 28th, and took several photos of them. The next afternoon, she appeared with two newborns in her arms.
I can’t find any information about monkey twins born separately on the web, while it seems that even doctors can hardly achieve a 100-percent-survival-rate delayed-interval delivery in human twin pregnancy, despite preferential or meticulous treatments.
So in this case, twins born apart is impossible.
Besides, twin pregnancy is very rare. It’s even rarer for a female monkey to carry a twin pregnancy to term-we can get the information in Arroz Marisco’s investigation video, of which I have put the link below.
Moreover, Ameia is at the bottom of the food chain in the group, and she already has her own baby. There’s no need for her to kidnap another one, risking her own safety or even her baby’s life.
So where did the other newborn come from?
It’s probably some young, first-time mom dumped her baby on the ground after she gave birth-it did happen last year in this troop, but that baby wasn’t so lucky as this one. Then the baby’s cries attracted Ameia luckily and was picked up and adopted.
