I'm so sorry you experienced this!! I've had to explain to people who make ignorant comments about my American English that English is a language and not an accent and if you want your students to be OF the world and not pigeonholed, you would introduce them to different English dialects and accents!! So frustrating!! I think this mindset will be difficult to change until schools begin to educate parents.

Watching this video as I’m preparing for work here in Taipei Taiwan and it comes coincidentally just as I was reflecting about this very same American accent issue. Yesterday (well, and the previous couple of weeks) I found myself dwelling on the “R” sound pronunciation while teaching and I realized how leaners seemed to be a bit shocked or somewhat taken aback every time I got to pronounce words with this letter. I also noticed how some of my fellow Co-host educators would also react every time I insisted and focused on this point but really did not pay much attention or give it much thought further. Now after watching your video (which I’m am deeply grateful and appreciate it so much) I will definitely be on the look out and try approach and/or address this issue with caution and even greater awareness. Thank you so very much Nhlane. I honestly live for and greatly appreciate your kind of content. Many blessings.

And surprisingly we are doing a great job with this neutral accent. I don’t have an American accent but l know that l am doing a tremendous job. Sometimes, l also ask myself about this obsession. But it is what it is.

The obsession runs deep. The problem is that there are also different accents within America, so they ten to not be specific on whether they want the California Accent or the deep South one (the Bible belt)🤷♂. Can the students/learners even hear the teacher when he or she is speaking in this preferred accent?🤷♂

It really runs deep. And it's the parents putting pressure on school leaders. I don't think they know the difference. But!! American accent apha sana😂😂

Thank you for this video Judy, and thank you for staying true to who you are. I have also experienced this when interviewing for a job in Taiwan. But I also thought if they want American accents they should only interview Americans then.

Hey Kristin. I am sorry you can cross this. My argument exactly, why not hire Americans if really that's what they are going for.

Heeeeee Judy! It’s a real thing hle. Ultimately ,the parents want their kids to go to America/ Abroad . The leaders of schools want to make sure parents are happy and keep it that way. The won’t hire someone who they feel will jeopardize their reputation to offer American curriculum which includes ‘ the accent’

Fair enough. They want to deliver according to the demands from parents. Then they should only interview Americans hle. Why demand American accents from South African though? Why?

@@judiciousmasuku THIS!!! Even the post should say. We are looking to Americans only! I have seen schools that specify the nationality they want.

to even think English originates from England....the Engl says it all....maybe it's because they are hoping their kids will attend American Universities....even then in these universities there will be lectures/Tutors by ppl with different English accents

The parent's demand for a certain accent from their preferred nationality is fine. The problem comes when the school leaders demand it from a person born and raised in Africa. Besides they don't care about its originality. They go with the hype.

Hey Thobeka. Thank you. I am really not much knowledgeable about the market and recruitment in China. Try checking for schools on platforms like Shrole, Search Associates and TES. You can opt to apply directly to the schools or via the teacher recruitment websites. Teacher Nomads, Seek teachers and many more.
