You forgot one Fleet Carrier, USS Robin. To be fair, she was not American, she was HMS Victorious, one of the Illustrious Class. She was lent to the USN after the battle of Santa Cruz Islands. As a result of shortages of USN Carriers due to damage and losses at this point in the war the Royal Navy sent HMS Victorious to reinforce the USN Pacific Fleet, she served with the USN from 23rd November 1942 - 26th September 1943. She retained her British Crew, though they wore USN uniforms, her air wing was made up of USN aviators and aircraft, and she retained the White Ensign and her name (USS Robin was her callsign). Not many know about USS Robin, important time though as it was the first time the USN and Royal Navy had operated Carriers together, so they learned a lot from each other. It ended up strengthening the abilities of both navies when it came to operating Carriers. Admittedly the USN had originally wanted to borrow three British Carriers, but damage to several RN Carriers prior as well as the demand for the rest in the Med (especially on convoy runs to supply Malta) meant the UK could only spare one at the time.

@lawrencewestby9229

Discounting the Langley, the USN entered the war with seven carriers, Ranger, Lexington, Saratoga, Yorktown, Enterprise, Wasp, and Hornet. The Ranger spent the war in the Atlantic since she was smaller than the others. By the end of October, 1942 Lexington, Yorktown, Wasp, and Hornet were sunk. At one point, with Saratoga undergoing repairs on the west coast, Enterprise was the only operational US fleet carrier in the Pacific. Through 1943 the Essex class fleet carriers and the Independence class light carriers began to join the fleet. Four of the five major carrier versus carrier battles were fought in 1942, Coral Sea (Lexington lost), Midway (Yorktown lost), Eastern Solomons, Santa Cruz Islands (Hornet lost). Wasp was lost to a submarine attack while operating in the Solomons in 1942.

@@lawrencewestby9229 1942 was a bad year for both the US Navy and the Royal Navy. As an interesting addition however, while the Enterprise was for a while the only USN Carrier operating in the Pacific, she was *not* the only Allied carrier. This is where the 'USS Robin' comes in. Actually HMS Victorious she was lent (along with her crew) to the USN in the Pacific from November 23rd 1942 to september 26th 1943. She sailed mostly with USS Saratoga. Due to her more advanced Fighter Direction (which the USN shamelessly copied :)) and smaller hangars in comparison to the USS Saratoga HMS Victorious transferred her Avengers to the Saratoga, and took aboard a USN Wildcat squadron from Saratoga and acted as a dedicated Fighter Carrier. Originally the British were going to lend the USN two carriers, Illustrious and Victorious, but to do so they had asked for USS Ranger to be temporarily attached to the RN Home Fleet, as the UK could not afford to lose 2 fleet carriers. While Ranger was small she was big enough to undertake Illustrious's role. The USN wanted to keep Ranger where she was however. Of course, Admiral King bitched and moaned, as he did about *anything* British, he conveniently forgot that the Royal Navy was hugely overstretched at this period (he had originally demanded no less than 3 Carriers from the Royal Navy and got pissy when the RN turned around and said we can't). In truth they could not really afford to send Victorious, let alone both Illustrious and Victorious. But that is Admiral King, his loathing of the British was well known and it led him to dismiss aid, expertise or explanations offered by them on multiple occasions. Admiral King aside though the months Victorious spent with the USN went well after a few initial hiccups. Of course, there were the normal USN mutterings about the relatively small armoured hangers... but then USN Carriers were designed for the Pacific, British Armoured carriers were designed for the North Sea, Atlantic and Mediterranean, in which large concentrations of land based aircraft were a definate problem rather than a risk. Thus British carriers were designed to withstand damage by 1000lb bombs and keep fighting. USN Carriers would likely not have survived the kind of damage several British Carriers received during the Malta convoys.... Different designs for different operational Theatres and different tactical concepts.
