Airdate: October 12, 1968
It’s Saturday morning, Oct. 12, 1968. The top 5 songs in the country are, “Girl Watcher”, ”Little Green Apples”, ”Fire”, ”Harper Valley P.T.A.”, and ”Hey Jude”. If you’re thinking of going to a movie tonight you might see one of the new films that opened this month including ”Coogan’s Bluff”, ”Romeo & Juliet”, “Night of the Living Dead” or “Barbarella”. On TV, cartoons are over and before ABC switches over to coverage of the first day of the 1968 Summer Olympics, American Bandstand is on and the kids are dancing to the unmistakable Janis Joplin. “Piece of My Heart“ is at #19 today and will peak at #12 in 4 weeks.
Last month Janis announced that she will be leaving BBATHC to go solo by the end of the year. This will be Janis’ biggest hit before her untimely passing in 1970 (“Me and Bobby McGee” was released posthumously in 1971). Unfortunately, she never made it onto Bandstand.
It may not be an obvious “dance song” but man would I love to jump in that studio and join the gang for this one! The lucky regulars dancing today are Robin Miller & Frank Vanderpuil (0:30), Daniel Del Campos (1:21), and Sharon Bell & Don Sanuskar (perhaps chuckling to Frank and Robin’s over-the-top lip syncing at 2:28, lol). The pre-teen kids watching in the stands was never explained during the episode (?)
Thanks for watching!
