Airdate: August 2, 1969
Stevie Wonder wrote “My Cherie Amour” back in 1967 (with the help of Motown’s Sylvia Moy and Henry Cosby) while he was a student at the Michigan School for the Blind. It was originally titled “Oh My Marcia”, as Marcia was Stevie’s girlfriend at the time. In 1968, with Marcia long gone, the song was retitled and completed and then finally released in January of ’69. Today the song is at its peak of #4 for the second week in a row. The actual #1 song today is “In The Year 2525” with “Crystal Blue Persuasion” at #2. (they were pretty close on today’s list)
The “cherie” dancing regulars today are: Famous Hooks & Jenny Nichols (1:24), Carl Ratcher (1:36), Frank Herrera (1:57), Art Mikaelian & Robin Miller (1:59), Don Sanuskar & Karen Sudlow (2:24), and Mike Langham (3:10).
A quick programming note: It’s those happy, happy, happy summer days again and I’ll be taking a few weeks off in August to maybe have a drink, have a drive and, you know, go out and see what I can find. But before I go, I will be posting this entire 45-minute unedited episode, including the dance contest winners (where they get the cars in studio), performances by the musical guest Underground Sunshine and a Film of Bill Deal and the Rhondels performing “I’ve Been Hurt”. That is all coming up on Friday (not Saturday) August 2nd, exactly 50 years from the original airdate. Don’t miss it!
