I don't think he was a coward. I think he just didn't want the bother of having to deal with Lester. Lester wants one year's pay with salary as his severance package. If he doesn't get that, he threatens to blow the whistle on how the company is choosing to spend some of its money on less than reputable affairs. Brad figured that just giving Lester what he wants would end up being cheaper than having to deal with the lawsuits and PR nightmares Lester would have otherwise given them. They lose money either way, but it was the lesser of two evils for them. At least, that's what I made of it. I didn't really see cowardice as a factor anywhere, but maybe I just overlooked it.

In fairness in the late 90s there were no issues of immediate importance. The economy was doing well crime was down most importantly the Cold War was history so no more fear of WW3. Sure issues existed but with a president whose biggest apparent crime was womanising(not rape) eh its acceptable. In hindsight this created a sense of alienation and there was gonna be a response to it. Fight Club hints at it and people saw the response on 9/11. The ideology of Bin Laden is basically Fight Club but with a God thrown in for good measure.
