It’s time for the CLASSICS! 😍 We wanted to show you guys a couple of less publicised but no less delicious places for classic American dishes (eg Katz’s doesn’t need any more publicity and you’ve seen it all before). Also a CORRECTION: Nathan's Famous hotdogs are beef, not pork like we mentioned. Sorry about that guys! I don't start multiple comments but after reading the nonsense from the burger _expert_ I have to give my stock response to the ketchup on hamburgers argument. Eat what you like but feel comfort knowing you're in very good company. *_Anthony Bourdain_* liked ketchup on burgers. *_Jacques Pépin_* always puts ketchup on burgers. *_Bobby Flay_* owns 20+ burger joints and he puts ketchup on his burgers. *_Matty Matheson's_* ideal cheeseburger is lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mustard and ketchup. I've been to JG Melon and that was indeed an excellent looking burger, Thomas. 👍

🤣🤣🤣🤣 I don’t think we’ve received a more self righteous comment. He would have had a field day with Sheena- she’s partial to a bit of mayo on her cheeseburger alongside ketchup and mustard. Very content to be in the company that you listed 😄 Cheers, Thomas

You may get a kick out of this or find it strange. The ideal burger condiment is regularly discussed around here so occasionally I'll pick up a basic pub cheeseburger (lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles) takeaway, no condiments. At home, I'll cut it into quarters and do a taste test. Recently I did one segment with mayo; one with mustard; one with ketchup; one with peanut butter (it's a thing) and I was shocked!! that the mayo was the best. But of course mixing is obviously the way to go. 😀👍
@ChasingaPlate

This is awesome Tosh 😆 Not sure about the peanut butter- but I can see how it would be a thing.... Yep- my ultimate condiment combo is ketchup, mayo and mustard- can't beat it in my books 🙌

Pfff burger expert. If he truly was one he'd know kechup is a classic condiment for burgers. Thomas im with you and really its an each to their own tastes when it comes to the humble beef burger. Im a kechup and dijon mustard( im no a fan of American hot mustard ) kinda gal. Oh and Sheena fried chicken is the bomb. Im a Korean fried chicken addict.
@ChasingaPlate

Kellie Squire thanks! Couldn’t agree more that it’s an each to his own thing. I mean if I was putting strawberry jam and cream on there then I’d expect some comments but ketchup and mustard is just a classic burger combo right?! That fried chicken was amazing. We wanted to return for another meal but sadly our time just didn’t allow it. Love Korean fried chicken also. It’s always top of our list when we get to Korea. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Cheers, Thomas 😀

*_NYC hot dog_* - A mustard and sauerkraut dog is delicious and one of my many favorite versions but when in the city you definitely must try a hot dog with *onion sauce* which is classic NYC. 👍 *_Pastrami_* - That looks ridiculously delicious. I did a pastrami on rye crawl with friends years ago. Picked up a loaf of rye and mustard and went to Ben's, Pastrami Queen, 2nd Ave Deli, Sarge's and Carnegie Deli (now closed). To avoid an overdose we bought one sandwich from each place and used the extra rye to make four minis - one slice of rye, mustard and pastrami. Did not do any side by side ratings since we dove in as soon as we bought the sandwiches but the overwhelming conclusion was that the pastrami from *_Katz's_* was #1 which we visited the day before. 😂 I recall that Pastrami Queen also received high praise as well. *_Excellent day, guys!_*

Hi Tosh! Onion sauce- will definitely give that a go next time 😄 love how you and your mates did a pastrami on rye crawl- that is epic 🙌 Have you had Katz’s recently? We’ve had lots of friends visit in the past few months and say they found it really dry. The pastrami in this video really blew us away. Couldn’t get over the tenderness and the depth of flavour. So happy you enjoyed this one. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena

I've dined at Katz's a few times but not since 2012, Sheena. Haven't done any reading on New York pastrami until tonight but I see that several local publications and NYC based multi-media organizations still rate Katz's pastrami at or near the top. Seems to me people love to hate on Katz's mainly because they are so expensive. It's the same with Jay Fai in Bangkok. Les Deux Magots in Paris. I could go on. Whenever people say anything negative about these well regarded places, they always sneak in a line about how expensive it is. "The service was terrible, the crab omelette is overrated, I had better drunken noodles at XYZ and oh by the way, her prices are ridiculous." 😀 The negative comments consistently follow this pattern. Since you two have lived in Australia for so long you're used to high prices but to a lot of folks $23 for a pastrami sandwich is offensive. It's a theory. Ha.
@ChasingaPlate
5 жыл бұрын
Totally agree on the price thing and how people always bring it into the equation. Our friend who went to Katz's recently though is a chef and was eating all over the show at the $$$$ places in town so I don't think the price played a factor in this instance. We'll definitely eat there next time- if only to satisfy our curiosity! One of those- has to be done things. Must admit- we did pop in on our way past to just stand and smell the place 😝😀
@tosht2515
5 жыл бұрын
I would definitely trust a chef indeed. Still, Katz's has had the same owner for over 30 years and has not changed any of their recipes so must have been an off day for the pastrami. It happens for sure. But I'm with you on a visit because it's so iconic (and delicious 😀).

Thanks for the video! It must have been so different there because of the tipping you had to do. As someone who isn't used to tipping, I was really against that concept of compulsory tipping when I was in North America and was mean enough to not tip at all when service was horrible (waited for one hour for food at one restaurant). I know that waiters there don't have a minimum wage but the idea of having to give a certain percentage was still hard to sink in.

@Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena Sheena, the history of tipping in the U.S. is quite interesting but just know that currently it's not simply the employers not willing to pay a living wage. In high-end to mid range restaurant environments, it's the wait staff who want to continue the tipping culture. $50,000 is easy while six figures USD is common. Not in $10 per plate joints of course but still, in cheap restos with high volume and table turnover, a waiter can earn way higher than one realizes. AND it's a great profession for those without any skills or formal education. Again, it's complicated but a very interesting economic, racial, gender, class and social matter.

Thanks for this Tosh- it's all very interesting- I'm going to do a bit of reading about it. I like how you point out that it's a good profession for those without any formal education or a trade. That makes a lot of sense. And I can see why you wouldn't want to give it up if you're earning $$$$! 😝

@Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena In my professional life, I'm involved with the challenges of America's workforce, entry level to professional, so low skilled occupations are of major concern for me. In my personal life, I eat out almost every single day so I interact with loads of bartenders and wait staff. I'm your classic over-tipper here in the U.S. and abroad. 😂

You have your facts wrong. First of all, it is a beef hot dog, not pork. Nathan was Jewish and he would never create a pork hot dog. Also, you put the mustard on top of the sauerkraut. That is a definite no no for hot dog experts. Also, you missed the french fries which go so well with the hot dog. Thank you.

Hi. Thanks for watching. Sorry re the incorrect meat info given. We picked that up and corrected it in the comment and description on the video. What's interesting though is, I believe, they're not kosher (although you can get a skinless version which I believe is). Please correct me if I'm wrong. Do you like the mustard under the suerkraut? As they do the sausage and the kraut before you get to the sauce station that wasn't really an option. We've had a few people mention their french fries are good. We'll have to try them next time. Thanks again for watching and we hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Thomas 😀

So this won't be a popular opinion but not a fan of NYC. Been there lots and lots of times and no doubt it's food scene and diversity is amazing but will take Chicago or LA over it. Sadly would have said San Francisco as well but the food scene there is being decimated by the high costs. Hoping you guys can do Chicago at some point because you really killed it in this series and would love to see you explore the food scene there.
