Woohooo! Way to go! More balut eating to come hahaha.. that's the trick part of eating balut, you ask the vendor to give you a 16day old or less . You did ate it correctly by simply sipping the broth (the best part) first, then eat whole the duck part, so that you wont see the remains of it, when lastly eating the yolk.

Balut is originally Chinese. Those Balut that you find in the Chinese grocery stores in the U.S. are actually genuine Chinese Balut. Balut was introduced by the Chinese traders in the 7,000 plus Archipelago/Phils. back in the 1800's. Facts💯%
@donnapoulin7116

Balut may have originated from China but a typical balut from the Philippines, from Pateros, is what I grew up with. It’s called balut sa puti where the 18 day embryo is still wrapped in the albumin. The one usually sold in Asian stores has the embryo on top of the yolk. It’s a matter of preference. I know one of these days I’ll be able to find the balut sa puti.
@lapulapupintado2892

@@donnapoulin7116 It doesn't matter what you grew up with, the fact of the matter is that Balut is originally Chinese, just like the ( Lumpia/Eggrolls and Pancit/Noodles that you grew up with are also originally Chinese and also the ( Ngohiong ) is also originally Chinese. No matter how you slice & dice it, they are all Chinese originally. Facts💯%
@donnapoulin7116

It’s not being where the food originally came from. I get it; it’s Chinese in origin but that doesn’t take away the fact that Filipinos have embraced this delicacy we now call balut. It doesn’t take away the fact that the Chinese were here even before the colonizers set foot in the Philippines; that’s why we have the oldest China town in the world. All I can say is balut or whatever it’s called in other countries will always trace it’s roots back to China.

Growing up in Hong Kong in the 80s, I came home one day and heard my mother saying that that morning our grandmother got one of those eggs from the market and ate it. Mom said she herself wouldn't eat it. I guess my grandmother had had some when she was growing up back in Taishan, China. There we can see the similarities in food cultures in this part of Asia.

It’s intimidating to eat fertilized duck in the Phil. ‘cause of the embryo you’ll see but it helps with the use of small drops of vinegar and a pinch of salt to enhance or balance the taste. In Vietnam, it’s different as of presentation and how it’s eaten. The vendor crack the top of the shell for you and they put it in a small bowl with coriander leaves, 🍃 chilies 🌶️ and lemon 🍋 on the sides then the condiments. you have vinegar, salt and ground pepper to add to your egg
