Actualy the coastline was ever larger as the dutch closed of the inland sea as well. PS, if yo enter the netherlands or belgium from either country by car you actualy feel it as the roads of the netherlands are smooth like a pool table and that of belgium ones like a nonstop trafic bumbs.

@@americangirlreacts Belgium is a special country in its own right , where the netherlands is the organised workplace and efficient , Belgium is the living room . It combines the old bourgondian life style. Great Beers and foods . The great thing is that the BeNeLux is quite small and well organised with public transport . you can go from the North of the country where there are sandy islands and seals . to limburg ( a profince shared with belgium and germany ) and luxemburg with the ardenne a wonderfull area of forrests and castles. where you have multiple languages all with in 400km .

You notice the difference between Germany and the Netherlands too. Once you cross the border you're suddenly able to actually see traffic signs without mud stuck to them and smooth roads instead of concrete slabs. No matter which way you leave the Netherlands, south or east, you feel pity for your car. And don't even get me started on German trains. They look great but aren't actually functional. Same with Belgium up to a point, but less so. When a German train is late it's counted in hours, not minutes. And us Dutch people get pissed off when a train is 5 minutes late. We're a spoiled bunch.

actually.. the below sealevel west parts of the Netherlands havent been flooded in decades.. (I'm living 2 m below sealevel for 5 decades in North Holland, never had any floods coming my way)😌 but.. Limburg (that seems to have your preference) has been flooded as recent as 2021. the danger didnt come from the sea, but from the rivers running to the sea.😶 and.. in answer to your question: I would love to see where you live. As much as you and charlie are learning about normal living in other countries.. i like to do the same about other countries. It's probably why we watch channels like yours.. to get an new appreciation for our own (efficient) country through your eyes. I never realised how privileged we are with our cycling infrastructure and efficiency until how inefficient a lot of others are. (and we still complain when a train is 10 minutes late.. or when there is a hole in a ground for over a week for instance) It's very refreshing to see my country through your and Charlie's eyes. (and not just bikes and many reaction channels about Europe) but learning how your daily life and experiences are, is as much interesting for us as ours is for you. 😉👍

In the villages and cities, the bicycle is the fastest, cheapest and easiest way to get around. No parking problems. And there’s excellent public transport. We don’t need an expensive car. Neighborhoods are cleaner (air), quieter, safer. Roundabouts are safer than crossings.

It's all about the comparison between Dutch and North American infrastructure and the intricate differences and how they impact quality of life, presented in a very accessible and easy to understand way.

Living closer to your neighbours really isn't bad at all, the general culture also has adopted to deal with that fact. Living closer together makes people respect other peoples privacy more, and it is basicly also expected. One thing you often hear from foreigners moving here or just visiting is that you often can basicly look straight into peoples living rooms and watch their tv or into their kitchens and see what they are having for dinner from the sidewalk, and yet it is rare to see closed curtains during the day. People just don't look in out of respect for other peoples privacy, and it is expected that you can just open the window or curtains and nobody will look in to what you are doing. It's usually only tourists that do that. And dutch houses are all brick and concrete construction so sound really doesn't travel well trough walls or floors like it would in wooden buildings. And most importantly it does provide you with so many more bennefits in almost all other expects of your life that it becomes a small price to pay. It is all about cost vs bennefits. And the bennefits just dwarf any of the percieved costs, which mostly are just getting used to something different.

What strikes me is that when he talks about cycling infrastructure and talking about Rotterdam, you only see a few pictures of Rotterdam, but mainly images of Amsterdam. Incidentally, I live next to Schiphol Airport, which is 4 meters below sea level. But that's no problem. I feel and am very well protected from flooding.

One thing to add is that the cycle paths actually cover the whole of The Netherlands. This means you can safely go from one side to the other side of the county on a cycle path - no need for using highways or dare I say interstates (or equivalent) at all. Also the infrastructure is designed in such a way that cyclists get to take the fastest routes and cars have to take the long way round which promotes cycling. I noted that you said you would be embarrassed to ride a bike, my guess is that you think bikes are for poor people; when I once traveled to SF with an American colleague he looked at me like I was totally insane when I suggested using the bus to go somewhere. Rant - Status symbols and possessions don't make you happy at the end of the day

Do you know by chance how long it would take to go completly go around the whole of The Netherlands? The Infrastructure here wouldnt even allow us to make bike paths even if we wanted to. Also, do you ever have dead animals on the side of the road? Here, if they wanted to cross the street, they would have to chance getting hit. The chances are good.

@@americangirlreacts That depends on the mode of transportation ;-) The problems are indeed big when a city is car dependent, but a city like Madrid (Spain) is making some interesting changes that could be applied over there as well. Sometimes there is roadkill, but in the Netherlands we also built wildlife corridors - specifically for this reason (and to avoid diving their territory into small pieces)

I almost missed my flight recently because of this but have to tell you that Schiphol is one of the best airports in the world if looking at it from a passengers view - spacious, bright, excellent and clear signage (just to name a few things)
