Well if he's predicting their futures and telling them they will not survive. Why not tell them in the attire where black culture had a renaissance? Even now the Harlem renaissance is a forgotten time where jazz Gods ruled. I'm sure the waredrobe dept spoke with the producers and creators about how they wanted each actor to look and how it connects to the greater picture. My understanding is waredrobe plays a lot into the telling of this story. Just look up Cab Calloway. Either way just wanted to say that Mr. Nancy was not in 70s attire, and that it was 1920s-1940s Harlem Renaissance.

Mr Nancy is a play on words: ANANZI or Ahnansi (Ah-nahn-see) “the trickster” is a cunning and intelligent spider and is one of the most important characters of West African and Caribbean folklore. The Anansi tales are believed to have originated in the Ashanti tribe in Ghana. (The word Anansi is Akan and means, simply, spider.) They later spread to other Akan groups and then to the West Indies, Suriname, and the Netherlands Antilles. On Curaçao, Aruba, and Bonaire he is known as Nanzi, and his wife as Shi Maria. He is also known as Ananse, Kwaku Ananse, and Anancy; and in the Southern United States he has evolved into Aunt Nancy. He is a spider, but often acts and appears as a man. The story of Anansi is akin to the Coyote or Raven the trickster found in many Native American cultures.

The entire eagle standard/totem pole thing is a useless argument, because the Eagle Standard and the Totem Pole had the very same purpose. Its all about screaming out to the gods, "Hey, come here and protect me!" Also, something that no one seems to click to is the comparison between Anansi's speech about how the African's weren't black until the Dutch decided that they [the Dutch] were white, and Czernobog's speech about how he used to have a brother and they were once basically the same guy, but then one day the people decided that his brother was Belobog (which translates literally as "White God") while he was Czernobog (which translates literally "Black God".) And how, like the Africans, he wasn't considered "lesser" until that happened. Its all about how belief affects the world.

About the "Coming to America" intros, they're stories written in a book, by a character we'll see more of later. They're very likely not literal representations of what happened. Anansi's dress and attitude might well be how the narrator knows Mr. Nancy to be in more recent days. What really happened isn't important anyway. It's what people believe happened that matters.

I think the Mr. Nancy sequence was a reference to Igbo Landing, when Igbo slaves from Nigeria turned on their captors and set destroyed the boat they were coming on. Although, when it happened, they actually made it to land, and then walked into the walked, choosing to die rather than live as slaves, because of the belief that the water spirit brought them here, so it would take them back. Just a theory...

The questions of racism are definitely something introduced in the show, in the book Shadow Moon is asked several times if he's Indian. He's apparently of mixed heritage, but favoring Native American in appearance. Sam believes "he may have some Indian in him" , and later Whiskey Jack makes some similar comments. The recasting of the character as African American obviously left some room to insert a new narrative into the story that wasn't present in the original work. In some ways, I think this works incredibly well, it's certainly timely. However, it's also a missed opportunity if we're going totally topical considering the NODAPL movement and other issues both historical and ongoing with the tribes in America.

i feel you guys missed a few very important parts. Being Americans and so much of modern culture being focused on race, Shadow saw what happened to him as a lynching when in Norse mythology Shadow hanging from a tree is a direct reference to Odin being hung from Ydragssil. It was also interesting to see the old slavic gods and their idea of duality being directly correlated to race. The Morningstar is the obvious power figure as opposed to the eveningstar who doesnt have a voice and is being ordered around by her older sister. Im interested as to what the midnight star has to add to this relationship. Czernobog directly states how he feels like a "black man" in his old country, he was treated like a villian for a long time and became the villian they wanted him to be. BTW i would think czernobog would have a lot of power from being shown in Fantasia XD. Bilquis' story arc is interesting. She seems to be gathering tons of power, probably outclassing many of her fellow old gods. This is due to her adopting technology (online dating, tinder) to feed her sacrifices and worship. There is a distinct feeling of longing, as she was staring at her old jewlery. Maybe she will be recruited by both sides and that may be a big game changer later down the season.

You both made a fairly good start, to get people talking. Some commenters are right: average viewers more versed in AA history or Slavic immigrant history will immediately get the slavery references or the Slavic references that the rest of us will have to look up. Doesn't matter, that we have to. The fact that we get new knowledge is the important thing. All roads lead to Rome, right? Comparing E01 and E02, we can clearly see that the old gods got to America on the blood, backs and suffering of their worshippers (Media says we're just lambs, right?). Mr. Anancy's arrival certainly was more flamboyant than Odin's. Burning ship, Zoot suit (please look up Harlem Renaissance!) Lastly, I'm not going to spoiler, but if that guy was alive inside Bilquis, then that's somehing to be said about sex goddesses being fertility deities. That honestly looked like a whole nother universe

Well, actually. The Mr Anancy scene is probably Mr. Ibis' recollection of Anancy's retelling of events. Maybe sometime in the 1920s or 30s. With a lot of Anancy's hindsight and maybe a little "I should've said" mixed in there. We all have friends who tell great stories. A little embellishment here and there. Imagine Ibis and Anancy out for a drink, and Anancy launching into that story... Great writing and acting!

I need someone to settle this for me. Shadow Moon never questions his sanity when he's experiencing the powers of the gods in the first episode. He meets Mad - he questions his coin trick - pulling coins out of thin air - but he doesn't question his reality. He meets Technical Boy - He's transported inside a physical vessel through the means of a headset, meeting a boy who smokes synthetic toad skins and manifests digital beings. Does not question his sanity. He meets Media in episode 2 who speaks to him through televisions in the guise of Lucille Ball LOSES HIS MIND about it. This discrepancy is killing me. And I absolutely fell in love with American Gods after the first episode.

Bryan Fuller truly take a new level of his hannibal-esque dream/fantasy scenes. This series is definitely one the best looking TV series of the year. While it's plain and simple that the show/novels identified three sisters as Zorya, I think the three sisters is something that more of resemblance the "ladies of the wood" in Witcher 3 or Sister of fate on God of War II in which a re-imagining of the greek-roman story-deities "Three Fates." One of the most common rituals found amongst all nations is the use of cleansing and purification. Buddhists, Shinto, Hindus, and all the Abrahamics all have similar practices as part of separating the profane or secular world from the sacred.

There was a reference to the bubble bath. I can't remember if it was in the first episode though I have a strong feeling it was. I believe it was when he was talking with his prison friend.

i am more curious to the fact that the spider god talks about the facts centuries and centuries forward prior to the timeline he is at. does it mean that these gods can travel through time and space? or that they have the ability to see into the future?
@chastityvicencio6

Good questions! How far into the future can he see? Can other old Gods do the same?

I think you guys are wrong about the lynching and strange fruit or as Wednesday says plucky fruit. While he was experiencing strange things before he was hung on the tree it opened his eyes more afterwards. Much in the same way Odin was hung on Yggdrasil to gain knowledge so Shadow had to hang also to open his eyes like a near death experience. Also strange fruit can be a psychedelic like peyote it's also referenced as strange fruit in a book called psychedelic gospels, so it's possible it has two meanings or even more if you consider that the Norse Gods ate golden apples to stay young.

Omg. That is so obviously a raven in the coffee grounds. Especially given all the other info about Wednesday …

could be any bird, since it's just an image with wings. but ravens are usually drawn perching, their wings closed, while it's kind of characteristic of the thunderbird to be drawn or carved or whatever with wings spread. if it's a raven, I'd say they're cheating by showing it like that :)

Exactly what I thought, first thing I thought was Huginn and Muninn. But which? Thought or memory?

Idk I thought the sisters reactions implied more than that. They already know who Wednesday is. I thought it must be a blood eagle. I would probably react in just that way if I read a blood eagle in someones fortune.

You guys need to do way waaay more research before you go and do the videos; people in the comments know more than you and you guys have a responsibility to investigate and document yourselves before standing in front of a camera and let all this information out to the world. If you're gonna do something do it right, after all like you said yourselves, this is your job...

You guys don't know about 'Strange Fruit'? You seriously don't know your American History? When we learnt about modern American history in school we learnt about the slave trade, lynching, segregation, the civil rights movement... and the songs that were around at the time; all that stuff and I live in the UK! What on earth do they teach you guys in your schools? smh.

I think it's important to consider what Lucille Ricardo said about time and attention being better than "Lamb's Blood". A lamb gets sacrificed to gods and in this case, the lambs are people. In both Coming to America scenes we see, a god can arrive in a new land, but only if human blood and lives are given in praise to that god. That means, the nature of the new gods could be different than the old gods.

Scott Guzman The nature of the gods is, at least in the book, the nature of the people who believe in and therefore create the gods. A warlike and bloody people like the Vikings create a warlike and bloody god like Odin. And people like us create Media and Technical Boy whose worship comes from our weaknesses rather than our strenghts. I think the old gods would stomp the new ones a new one 😆.
