Another amazing movie with Edward Norton is "PRIMAL FEAR "

18:40 Actually, it kinda is.. I'been hearing the podcast of an Ex-Nazi and he talked about how he was in the military and a lot of nazis actually realize and change his mentality after becoming friends with a black man from the military. He said that maybe this whole scene is the most real thing that American History X, all that change of mentality after met someone you hated is absolutely real. EDIT: To me the most crazy thing is that he said that when he was a full nazi, he watched this movie and laugh the whole time, feeling it was some kind of comedy.

Very brutal yet unfortunately accurate depiction of the lurid state that America was and still is in. Norton got his second Oscar nomination for this movie. And yes, Danny is played by Edward Furlong whose acting debut was John Connor in T2: JD. Other roles include Detroit Rock City and Pecker. He's had several controversies involving criminal activity, including substance abuse, unfortunately.

Still one of my favorite movies to this day! And I agree that the way they handled the whole racism thing is done way better in this movie than in many more recent ones where it's (sorry about the pun) more black and white, like "they're racist because they're bad people!".. Ok, but why are they bad people? What happened in their life for them to become like this, were they bad people when they were kids, etc.. Edward Norton's acting was excellent too! Loved how different that part was for him, yet he pulled it off perfectly. I liked him a lot in Primal Fear too, and it's crazy how different he looks despite the movies being like 2 years apart.

Movie was filmed in black and white to show the past but also it had double meaning, it showed Edward Nortons character when he viewed things as black and white. Not as good as American History x but still good and has a terrific ending

The sad thing is this was a little under 30 years ago and WW2 happened so long ago- there are people still marching under Nazi flags in America (Ohio) wearing ski masks and carrying guns and banners - threatening drag brunches. It’s crazy

I really think the problem is is that the vast majority of people are not as smart as Edward Norton’s character or Avery Brooks They find someone to blame and that’s where it ends They never ask themselves the question that he just put to Derek If they did, we could probably start to move forward

People can change..and believing they can't is very harmful. If you just believe nobody can change and instead of trying to change them you hate them back then the cycle of hate will be passed through their kids and so on

Yes. Statistics matter. When 6.5% of the U.S. Population commits 52% of all homicide. When the single mother-hood rate of that exact same community raises from 21% to 75% in 50 years. Failure to understand the correlation between these two numbers is the problem we have today. Statistics are the *only* thing that matters, your feelings do not.
@MovieFusion

My point about statistics not mattering is that statistics shouldn't shape your viewpoint on a whole group of people.

This is ONE of two films that i think everyone should watch. The other is Schindler's List. Neo nazis shave their heads because they're trying to be skinheads, but most REAL skinheads are often Sharp skinheads (skinheads ahainst racial prejudice), skinhead was never a racist movement. (Especially here in the UK)

Sometimes all it takes is just one man. I'm not sure if you are familiar with Daryl Davis... a personal hero of mine. Daryl Davis is a black musician that has converted over 200 KKK members by befriending them... and educating them. He's been doing it since the 80's.

I don't understand how people's brain's work in "Normal" situations, how people react to one and other has always confused me but racism/bigotry is something that eludes me completely, the ability to look at someone's skin colour, religion or sexual orientation and feel nothing but hate baffles me. Perhaps that makes me naive?
