Oh my days my head started hurting just thinking about this because jts the weekend and usually I just stop thinking about work when I'm off, as someone who's a native Pole but moved to England at the age of 24, learned English to some degree of fluency and now works as an insurance broker, having to go from hanging out with my family and friends and using Polish exclusively during said weekends, to using English while at work, having a sales type job meaning I'm on the phone almost all the time... It's such a brainfuck because a) when you use 2 or more languages in such manner, knowing them fluently and using them to such degree, you basically develop 2 different personalities and switching between them is very confusing as you have very little control over it... and b) coming to work on Monday, I sound exhausted or hungover or smth even if I'm well rested because some English words will elude me and I struggle with my accent after few days of not using English at all. After an hour or two it goes back to normal but its very annoying... I forgot what my point was LMAO

The polish diaspora is humongous, compared to the size of the country, due to the tumultuous history. Even in the US you have polish radio and TV stations in and around Chicago. But the most fun thing is to find people speaking polish in places you would never expect it. Like my uncle once met a black guy in Africa in 1980's who spoke perfect Polish. Turns out, when the polish Army went trough Africa in the 2nd world war, they had one of their internment camps set up there by the British, he came into the camp as a little boy and became friends with the polish kids, so he came every day and went to school with them. Learned Polish and could still speak it, when he was old. I think it was in Tanzania. Also super funny, when polish visitors think they can say anything in Polish between each other, mostly about people around them and you talk to them in their language after a while. Poles have the impression that no one speaks Polish outside of Poland, but that is very far from the truth. You can find polish speakers on overy continent and in the weirdest places.

The roots of Polish language are closer to russian. Where in german we only have words inspired by their language, russian and polish have a lot of words share pronunciation and meaning. So you could say polish is russian with weird accent.

It is quite amusing that few Americans know the following description of the Polish language. After all, its author is Henry Miller, one of the most important American novelists. The quote comes from the 4th chapter of his novel Sexus. "There is one thing I like about the Poles - their language. Polish, when it is spoken by intelligent people, puts me in ecstasy. The sound of the language evokes strange images in which there is always a greensward of fine spiked grass in which hornets and snakes play a great part. I remember days long back when Stanley would invite me to visit his relatives; he used to make me carry a roll of music because he wanted to show me off to these rich relatives. I remember this atmosphere well because in the presence of these smooth-tongued, overly polite, pretentious and thoroughly false Poles I always felt miserably uncomfortable. But when they spoke to one another, sometimes in French, sometimes in Polish, I sat back and watched them fascinatedly. They made strange Polish grimaces, altogether unlike our relatives, who were stupid barbarians at bottom. The Poles were like standing snakes fitted up with collars of hornets. I never knew what they were talking about but it always seemed to me as if they were politely assassinating someone. They were all fitted up with sabers and broadswords which they held in their teeth or brandished fiercely in a thundering charge. They never swerved from the path but rode roughshod over women and children, spiking them with long spikes beribboned with blood-red pennants. All this, of course, in the drawing room over a glass of strong tea, the men in butter-colored gloves, the women dangling their silly lorgnettes. The women were always ravishingly beautiful, the blond houri type garnered centuries ago during the Crusades. They hissed their long polychromatic words through tiny, sensual mouths whose lips were soft as geraniums. These furious sorties with adders and rose petals made an intoxicating sort of music, a steel-gibber which could also register anomalous sounds like sobs and falling jets of water."

Actually it is polite to come slightly late if you are invited to someones house in Poland, but only if you visit 30+ years old people and only if it’s something between 5-15min anything more is rude.

I can only recommend learning Polish, with some bias XD I'm English and I've been learning Polish for seven years come May, as I met a very special lady who recently became my wife and wanted to better understand the culture she comes from. I recently moved to Poland to live with my wife and my now in laws, and having to adjust to speaking Polish is a challenge, though I generally understand most of what people say to me or what I hear generally. From my experience, Polish people always appreciate any amount of effort in trying to grasp their language, as they know themselves that it's a tough one! As they say, "polska język, trudna język"

Also, you can drop the subject when you are talking about yourself: "I want to meet you" -> "(Ja) chcę Cię poznać". It's even more natural to drop it and just say "Chcę Cię poznać".

2137 is funny for younger polish people, because polish 4chan community started slandering the pope, saying thst he was a pedo. They did that to piss off Christians who idolized John. It was discovered that he has hidden evidence of paedophilia in the catolic church. Older citizens of Poland, whom our Pope gave hope during the communist regime, to this dzy dont accept the fact that our own Pope couldve done something so horrible. Teens and young adults make fun of John Paul II in order to highlight how stupid idolising a guy like that is, and annoy the old people, who are the main voters for PIS, a political party young people absolutely hate. It's not even a minor reason why they dislike the party, but PiS also cultivate the cult of John Paul II, real name Karol Wojtyła.

He is legit a comedian 👌🏼 But in all seriousness, this video actually reveals how he acquires language so fast and so well. 😳 Notice how into it he is. His dopamine (pursuit chemical) is definitely firing off as he’s learning the polish. He’s fascinated and engaged. He’s all about it like a sports fanatic. But what I don’t understand is how he remembers so much so fast. 😤 No fair.

The guy who speaks so fast in the first Easy Polish video, the way he speaks, I would say he comes originally from Upper Silesia and the Silesian dialect is his natural way of speaking Polish.

Well I cannot agree with catsoup about one thing: similarities with German. Polish isn't really that influenced by German. Surely it is influenced by latin, by English, by Czech to some degree but German isn't that significant. We have some technical vocabulary from German but it isn't much. Yet in this video he stressed that Polish is highly influenced which is a mistake. With this kind of sentence foreigners might think that it's easier for us to learn German. It is very hard for poles to learn German. Personally whatever I understand from German is merely based on my English knowledge as it shares a lot with German in my opinion.

And Polish was recently influenced far more by French, while Germans words are usually older, and they have been in the language for some time and become very different to modern German words.

Very true! Polish has a few loan words from German (even more so in Silesia) but that's the extent of it.
