From Wikipedia: "Edward is a traditional murder ballad existing in several variants. In English its versions were collected by Francis James Child as Child ballad number 13.[1] The Roud number is 200. (Synopsis) A mother questions her son about the blood on his sword. He puts her off with claims that it is his hawk or his horse, in some combination, but finally admits that it is his brother, or his father, whom he has killed. He declares that he is leaving and will never return, and various creatures (wife, children, livestock) will have to fare without him. His mother then asks what she will get from his departure. He answers "a curse from hell" and implicates his mother in the murder."

For me, this is Edward talking to his mother about why William isn't with him after going out to the snow. The chorus is his mother scolding him and demanding the truth from him. And every time Edward gets more and more clear with what he did to William but she can't do anything about it cause they're far away from town and winter is hard to travel in.

I really think that Edward killed William because he was jealous. Here Edward insists on the fact his mother really like her second-born child William as he nagged him and calls him "spoilt", while she neglected her first born. It's not impossible that William was more successful than his elder, that's why the mother says Edward "bites the hand that feeds", because he was also a better hunter, considering Edward and William were hunting when he's been killed. The mother know they were rivals and that he had strong hatred toward his younger brother, And so she disowned him and left him "naked in the snow", but she couldn't find the courage to denounce him as she didn't want to lose her last son (because Edward probably should've been hanged for the murder of his brother)

I like this one, though I've only listened to a few, it actively references that this kid killed someone. There's nothing to piece together, Edward killed someone and is lying simple as that, Mary is another one that does this aswell as Johnny but with Johnny you have to guess if he's the murderer or the victim.

Johnny is the killer in Johnny, the group of children come upon a fresh grave of another child that is also littered with dead animals, Johnny was known for being odd (and thanks to that song’s trailer) and setting traps to capture small animals. And most serial killers start by hurting small animals. Johnny later appears in another video with several other killers, it’s pretty lavinia’s bar, Mary is feeding her dog table scraps, unwed Henry is watching for his next bride, and Johnny is starring at a bird outside.

@@keelhaulin_ocean_prince It's not. While The Twa Brothers is similar, in most variants of that the murder is accidental or the variant lacks the blood implicating the surviving brother. It's based on another murder ballad also collected in the Child Ballads titled Edward.

That would explain it perfectly! Edward himself even says at the beginning that he and William often play in the woods.

My interpretation is a little different. The song is being sung by two characters (Edward sings the verses and the Mother sings the chorus). In the Mother's verses, she says "you bite the hand that feeds and crow, so count here naked in the snow". It seems that to punish Edward she forces him to stand out in the snow naked and count until he either dies or admits his deed.

Head-canon: Edward met up with Mary & Johnny after he left, and after discovering they each had a common problem (being suspected/accused of murder), they decided to leave together before the “winter” hit. And for those of you that say Mary wouldn’t do that because Edward & Johnny actually did kill someone (or someTHING in Johnny’s case) while her “murder” was accidental, how would SHE know that unless they told her the truth? They could easily say they’ve been wrongfully accused, or that their crimes were accidental as well, which would make her more sympathetic towards them. 🤷🏻♀️

I wonder if this is slightly inspired by Edward Gein. When he was younger, his brother (though his name is Henry) died strangely. He was seen as the stronger older sibling, which lead people to wonder if Ed killed him in jealousy. It also fits due to the religious nature of his mother. Just a thought. Probably not but I thought of it when I was watching a documentary on Gein.

@cannibalisticrequiem

The background singers are just singing "Oh" with different inflections. Not really for any particular reason, just to add to the music. If you're asking about the voice whispering, I believe it's a child's voice, and they're counting (1, 2, 3, 4...). It's meant to represent William, the brother mentioned in the song, playing with his brother Edward (namesake of the song), before being killed.

I see it as an argument between a mother and one of her sons (Edward) as to why the other son (William) has not yet returned home, and why Edward is all bloody. "Mother shall I tender a stab...While your first born is cold as a slab..." 2:10 - 2:35 [Mother-Son relationship] "These stains are of a hare that I bleed...this is not the shade of his red [blood]..." 1:10 - 1:25 Near the end of the song, it sounds like Edward gives in and admits that William is dead, but he won't be found until the snow melts (2:55-3:40) I'm sure there is more to the song that could be analyzed, but thought that could help you as a "summary" of sorts. :)

I think this is about Edward Gein, TBH. I mean, it talks about his mother, and with the song being called Edward, and Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho being based off Edward Gein, it could be possible.
