More about the video:
This video shows how I help Japanese speakers separate R from L.
Articulation is physical and unconscious, you don't think about how you speak in your first language, you just speak. We use unconscious muscle movements to articulate sounds.
That makes changing the habit rather difficult. Any solution must raise the learner's awareness of the problem, and then build new muscle habits.
Peggy shows you how she raises student awareness of the differences between their first language's pronunciation and English's pronunciation of R/L and how she helps them divide the Japanese single r/l sound into the two separate sounds of English.
In Japanese pronunciation, R and L are considered the same sound, so Japanese students really can't hear the difference, at the start. Some have difficult hearing the difference, ever!
To raise awareness, go to manythings.org/pp and listen to the R/L minimal pair listening exercise. Students should play this little game over and over, until they begin to hear the difference between the two sounds.
Once they can hear it, then they need to control their articulation muscles so they can feel how differently English L and R feel. Even if they can't hear the difference, they'll be able to feel the difference.
And this practice, over and over, of feeling the difference, will eventually lead to hearing the difference. Which leads to articulating them differently.
This really works! It's just one of the many strategies you'll find in Peggy's pronunciation guides on Amazon, geni.us/2w21/
