I think the talking bits in season one is where the name of the show comes from as they are both 'chewin' the fat' which means 'chat in a leisurely and prolonged way'.

For chatting bits in a sketch show done right, see Smith & Jones' head to head sketches!

And maybe Peter Cook and Dudley Moore before that!

In the Scotland song he goes 'Where else in the world would put up with Dorothy Paul?' and yet she was in an episode of Still Game, a very good episode actually. So a wee bit tongue in cheek I think.

That ending wasn't sped up on the DVD. The talking bits sadly was in the whole 1st series. They got rid of it at the 2nd series where it was just all skits and sketches

26:43 I don't think that they would get away with the police/woman scene now! Mind you, given recent high profile cases in the Metropolitan Police, maybe they are close to the truth regarding police attitudes when dealing with female complaints!

12:05 Well Victor's character certainly underwent some development after this! He comes across as very staid in this (not withstanding the fact that he is indulging in online sex chat).

It's weird how Mitchell and Webb does similar 'off camera' moments but somehow they get it so right where as Chewin' the Fat gets them so wrong. Fortunately as others have said they are short lived. My advice would be to do the rest of series 1 in one go to get it over with. There are good points in it that you don't want to miss but there is a huge quality shift from series 2 onwards. And then onto Burnistoun I hope!

Wow those early episodes weren't as good as I remember. I'm not sure if monthly will do it justice. It's one of those comedies where part of the joke is the repetition of characters in situations, so the comedy comes from instantly recognising the character and the catchphrase. An example is the "Good Guy...Good guy" sketch. If you don't remember it from the first episode, what he's doing pointing at Gingerbread men and saying it is harder to understand.

Cheers for doing this Series 1 is the weakest Series 2 onwards are so much better The flat scenes should've only be in the first episode to explain to the viewers what the show is about etc. Having it in episode 2 was not needed.
