The "blinkers" mentioned are the indicators. So the (typically) orange lights at the side of the car for indicating turning.

It's fine for a license to be so expensive as long as you have mobility alternatives like you do in Germany. Some people shouldn't drive, but they can always get groceries, get to work etc. just by walking, biking or public transport. In the US, you can't survive without a car in most places, so everyone has to drive. Poorer people would be completely excluded from participating in society if everyone had to receive proper training and pay for it. The way infrastructure is set up in the US, the only choice society has is to either have untrained, dangerous drivers everywhere or to have millions of second class citizens, where money decides who gets to actually live their life. Sadly a common pattern, just like health care and education.

There are always ways to get a diver's licence without paying (money) in Germany. You can go to the Bundeswehr and make your driver's licence (not only for cars but for trucks as well, even for tracked vehicles [civilian construction enterprises are glad to get former tank drivers for their tracked construction machines]) there. A school friend of mine went this way. But of course, the price is joining the Bw for some years.

Hi Pablo! It's almost the same, all over Europe. And all over Europe, the same traffic signs are used, with few "local" differences. That is also the case, around the costs, with few "local" diffrences as well.

look at it this way: an automobile is a very dangerous object. it weighs far more than a ton and can reach speeds in excess of 200km/h. it is potentially deadly for innocent bystanders and lawmakers know there is a myriad of reasons why drivers might not be up to handle it responsibly. drivers can be ill, drunk, under the influence of drugs, distracted or absent-minded or just tired etc - but at least the law can force them to learn the basics, the traffic signs and rules. we don't make it easy for people to get guns and cars can be as dangerous as guns. if you want to drive a car you need a license and you need to prove you know the rules and can actually drive.

Thank god I made my driving licence in 1984 in Germany and I paid around 1200 Deutsche Mark and that was considered expensive (because I took some extra lessons). I passed on my 1st attempt which I couldn`t believe...the examiner was extremely rude and unfriendly and criticized me without interruption... suddenly he handed out the licence to me😵💫😂😂😂

i paid almost exactly the same in '97. and just 2.5 years later my brothers got an introduction offer for 'only 1000€' (brand new driving school) which was already considered cheap at that time.

when i did my test the girl that did it before me got scalded by the examiner too. "If i was your father i'd never give you my car. You did this this, that... here is your licence." Maybe it's a thing they did for fun.

A little journey back in time: my spouse and I got our driving licenses (in the early 1980s) for the equivalent of around €650. Almost 15 years ago, the license for our children cost around €1400/€1500. Now it's twice as much. Well, I hope that my current investment in playful road safety education for preschool children will also have an impact on my grandchildren getting a driving license later on. ;)

Costs have gone up because people need more lessons before they are able to pass the test. Even in the theory/written test, the percentage of people passing it on their first try has gone down in recent years. Why that is, can be debated. Aren’t the young no longer able to pay enough attention to learn the rules or are they just not motivated enough to study hard enough?

5:20 That is so true. When I was 6, I know what all almost other cars on the road were, because there was a bok that listed them all and I memorized it. And at 7-8 I'd know what every button, control and panel in the car was for and what it meant. I pretty much asked all the time: "Why are we waiting now, why do you move over etc." I may have been pretty annoying... But I passed everything first try, without any rehearsals apart from the mandated hours. And that is my main point: If you are interesting something and in learning more about it, you will be better at it. And you can see that on the road. People in the cheapest cars available (Lupo, Polo, any Dacia, Smart, or any French brand), are usually terrible drivers -> I don't care about what my car is and what it feels like, as long as it takes me to the shops -> I don't care about driving -> I'm no good at driving.

I had to make it two times through all these theoretical and practical tests, because I lost my drivers license once. And that also meant for me to pass the MPU🤪, which is something that I wouldn't wish to anyone😇 But I somehow made it through all that, and now I'm on the road again 🚙🥳

It costs so much that you think very carefully about whether you want to drive too fast and risk your license. And the other thing is that you don't necessarily need a car in Germany because there are many other options (at least not everywhere). In the USA you can hardly live without a car.

Shame on me I passed my license, practical part, only at the 2nd attempt which in 1998 drove the costs up to 3000 DM (roughly 1500€). The theory I passed in 1st attempt with almost 100%. But in my 1st practical exam to fly into the curve in 5th grar leading up to the Autobahn just didn't fly with the examiner for some reason..😂😅

It's no longer correct, that you can only drive automatic, when you make your driver's license in an automatic. It used to be like that, but it was recently changed. My niece did her test less than two weeks ago and she is allowed to drive both stick and automatic, even though the test and her lessons were in an automatic car.
