The main difference between this show and American talk shows I think is that they're allowed (and encouraged) to drink which aids significantly in the chaos. I don't know if Benedict Cumberbatch would have dived off a table to tackle a giant teddy bear in front of Johnny Depp without alcohol in the mix 😅 but maybe he would! If you want to see more Greg, check out his appearances on Would I Lie To You

When you graduate to watching whole shows, the episode with Bill Murray, Matt Damon, and Hugh Bonneville is a MUST. I won't go into what happens, but holy cow, did that crew have fun on the show!! The couch setup used to be standard in American talk shows. Johnny Carson did it that way for his whole run. But somewhere in the 80's, talk shows did away with the couch and went to single guests. Tom Snyder had been doing that for years, and somehow everyone just decided to follow him for some reason. So we rarely see this kind of camaraderie and fun over here. (Also, NOBOCY serves booze, so the shows here are almost never as fun as Graham's. Jeez, American prudery really ruins everything.)

I grew up watching Johnny Carson, Jonathan Winters, Don Rickles and all the great old American comedians, of which there are so many, but American talk show hosts just were very hit or miss for me. They're allowed to drink, encouraged to drink, so of course they're more relaxed... Plus Graham is a master of getting them talking and then just letting them talk, even amongst themselves instead of talking over them as if the questions are more important, like they do in the state's... The trick to a British talk show is the interviewer isn't the star and the questions are irrelevant, kind of like the panel shows, they invite conversation rather than seek answers, and then step back, and some of the best interactions are between the guests.
@LoveCats9220
10 ай бұрын
So true! Also, I think it helps guests relax because the focus isn’t solely on one person. Quite frequently they’ll start to tell stories amongst themselves and Graham just rolls with it. By watching a full episode, at the end is something called The Big Red Chair, and you’ll hear some pretty funny stories from non celebrities too. Compilations can be funny but sometimes it misses an earlier part of the show which ties into a story. One of the funniest full episodes imo, is with Miriam Margolyes, Alan Cumming and Daniel Radcliffe

These are fun, it’s a good idea to watch more of these. Just an FYI, the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, way back when, was more like this version of a talk show than something Fallon or Kimmel puts on these days. It wasn’t unheard of for Dean Martin to drop by, drink in hand, when Frank Sinatra was a guest, for example. And each guest would stay on the couch as the new guests were introduced, so you would end up with an interesting mix of people with at least a little bit of interaction. I’ll see if I can find a good one. Peace … (Nope, found nothing, just lots of individual guests.)

Many famous celebrities actually regard being a guest on Graham Norton's show as a badge of honour now, because they know they can relax and have fun. You're right in saying it's partly due to being allowed to drink alcohol and having them all talk to each other, with Graham just dipping in every now and then to keep the conversation going (he's an absolute master at knowing when to step back and let his guests shine, which I think is a dying skill with many of today's talk show hosts.) However, it's also because he has a phenomenal research team, who are very thorough and go deep into the backstories of all their guests. They're the ones who find the glorious little nuggets of trivia, rather than just hash on the same talking points and controversial issues that the stars may not want to talk about. Matt Damon openly said on the show that this show was the best he'd ever been on, and even Bill Murray, who is apparently notorious for being a little shut down and stiff on talk shows, clearly had a ball when he appeared on it with Hugh Bonneville and Mat Damon (there are some great clips of that one to be found on KZitem!)

One thing that always stood out to me when I saw him was that he was always surrounded by a group of friends who kind of shielded him off(probably to keep him from getting bothered). They were always very rowdy and loud in a good way. Lots of laughing and chatting and then you'd see Graham amongst them, drinking and quiet. Not talking. Just drinking and nodding. Don't pause and comment. Just make sure the volume of the video is slightly higher than your voice. That way we can hear you and the video while you react. Pausing during jokes kills the momentum.

Good advice thanks! So pausing between segments would work then, just avoid a full pause DURING the clips, sounds like.

I'd love to see you react to music you're unfamiliar with! And honestly if you got into K-pop your views and subs would skyrocket. But I could give you all the deets on BTS ;)

Ohhhh yes :) But I need to do myself a favor and rewatch. I'm sure I'd appreciate it more as a more jaded adult than when I first watched when I was younger. haha
