Gosh this brings back memories from my childhood. Much loved comedians. What is funny is that they are both from Oxford or Cambridge, Dudley Moore was a brilliant jazz pianist, so they are playing in the most working-class accents. I loved the characters. I saw the other guy, Peter Cook in a cafe in Hampstead about 30 years ago! May they both RIP.

There’s something wholesome about watching a Pete and Dud sketch, because once Dudley starts laughing, Peter just rides it to get him to laugh more and that makes him laugh as well. The art gallery one’s the best for that.

I know I'm a week behind so probably this won't be seen by anyone, but if you can find the episode of Clive Anderson Talks Back when every guest was Peter Cook it really is worth watching. Clive Anderson Talks Back was a pretty standard weekly talk show but for one week they decided to break from the usual set up and instead had Peter Cook improvise 4 different characters for Clive to interview. Watching them both try to roll with wherever Peter Cook's mind took them was wonderful.

In the bad old days licencing laws meant you could no longer consume alcohol in a bar/pub, so at 11pm ALL the pubs would empty out of mainly blokes that had just downed as much beer as possible bufore the landlord called Time, so 11:30 is approximately when must chaps would arrive home in a very merry state. Ergo 11:30 is an indication they were arriving home extremely drunk. Hence all the strange imaginings

As many people have said, Peter and Dudley loved trying to make each other break 🤣 Satirical comedy is what Brits do best... I only know this through my Dad, who was a huge fan of Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Spike Milligan, the Goon Show, and Monty Python... I rememeber having a conversation with my Dad about one of these sketches, and my Dad tried to explain the satirical element... ....here you have two "working class" men, in a pub.. but what we could never expect is the dialogue and intelligence of these two characters... noone expects the working class, with such thick London accents to have such eloquent discussion ! And the lunacy that ensures 😂 I didn't fully understand at the time, but I certainly do now ! 😄👍

They should not have been involved with Monty Python! They were contemporaries and they tried to out goon each other! The people back then were pleased and the comedians beloved. @@alanfoster6589 i might be wrong, but I think at least some of the filters referred to in the previous comment are a part of the commissioning process. Not to do with PC rules, but quality control. It would be difficult to imagine so much improvisation and experimentation being given premium air time these days.

I don't think Peter ever cracked again, but would do his best to crack Dudley up every time, like in the art gallery sketch where Dud is laughing into a sandwich and Pete goes "You enjoying that sandwich?". Another great one is the sketch "A Bit of a Chat" - classic hilarity into pathos. You'll never say the phrase 'a bit of a chat' the same way again. And if you want to go super wild, check out anything you can get away with from Derek and Clive, their alter-egos. Interesting story of how it came to be released as it was a private joke, and still would be way too strong for general broadcast.

You really need to check out Pete and Dud at the art gallery, which has some of the funniest moments of them breaking eachother. I also think it's a funnier sketch than this one. As others have mentioned Peter Cook and Dudley Moore did a couple of albums as their alter ego's 'Derek and Clive', which were essentially a very X rated version of the Pete and Dud characters, and by far the best thing they ever did. I'd treat carefully with that stuff for reaction though, as it's completely devoid of any filter.
