Animation in general seems to now get very low age ratings across the board. For example the second Made In Abyss movie, Dawn of the Deep Soul is also FSK12, which puts the German rating among the lowest world wide. That had me doubting if I had watched the same movie as the regulators. So I checked the reasoning. Which boiled down to: The setting is mostly what saved the rating. Because they deemed that viewers above the age of 12 could clearly tell this apart from reality.

Let me put it this way: · In Germany, if the child is old enough (16+) it is considered a borderline family movie because it's a piece of cultural heritage, and so are all of the Werner movies. I remember the family including one pair of grandparents sitting together in the evening and watching it on TV. And yes after 8:15 PM they show things like that because luckily our freedom of press and speech includes swearing on TV. · In the US they would arrest the CEO of the channel for showing it and the writer fired without compensation and blacklisted, in the Southern States and Utah probably even lynched by "concerned parents", although they were the ones letting their children watch it unsupervised in the first place. 😅

yes, as a protestant or being evangelic, i have to protest against us always being called evangelical/evangelicals. that part of the christian faith is more radical while protestant/evangelic is simply one of the two main branches of christianity in germany/europe that split off from catholics after Martin Luther several centuries ago and probably also changed a bit more over time. there are many more, but those two are THE widespread versions, in contrast to the usa where seemingly almost every church has some other variant and more diverse and radical groups are better known than "our" two main versions ... sorry, i have no idea what exactly "Lutherans" are (maybe more strictly adhering to the first version after the split?); there are just too many branches (often contradictory to each other) on the big christian tree which is itself only one in a forest of related trees (eg judaism, islam). ps : Lude = pimp, and Lude just sounds similar to Jude. translations are always difficult, and even more so when trying to keep some jokes. thus for the subtitles they tried to mimic that accoustic similarity by not traslating it as pimp and instead calling it "Lewds" (sounds similar to Jews)

"The little Asshole" is a comic book character created by Walter Moers. He has nothing to do with Werner, created by Brösel. His first appearance was in a comic book in 1986, the movie was released in 1997 with a FSK 12 (FSK is the _Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle der Filmwirtschaft,_ voluntary self-control of the movie industry - the equivalent of CARA/MPAA for movie age rating. The big difference is, that - for sales and cinemas, at least - the FSK ratings are legally binding. There are the follwoing ratings/age restrictions: Free for all audiences/without age restriction; FSK 6, FSK 12 - a movie with this rating can be seen in cinemas by kids over 6 when accompanied by a parent - FSK 16 and FSK 18). As you can see, Germany is quite lax in terms of curse words, sexuality and similar things, but restrictive in terms of violence (most notably, glorification of violence, which can even be a crime). The character _The Little Asshole_ is literally exactly that: A politically incorrect sob, who is about 12 years old at the time of the movie. He sells his sister slip to a classmate, drugs hios neighbour's dog, drugs the punch at a school party leading to a mass orgy. The only person who likes him is his gandpa, known as _Old Fart_ (Alter Sack, it's the most accurate translation used in English). There is even a 2006 sequelt (that has a FSK12 rating as well), titled _"The Litte Asshole and the Old Fart - Dying is Shit",_ but it was way worse recieved both critically and commercially. Probably mostly because it utilised the exact same form of humour, the exact same tropes and similar punch lines, that were simply out in 2006. Ah, btw: Yes, this mocie can be freely broadcast on tv, as broadcasting restrictions are also influenced by FSK ratings. And those restrictions don't apply to anything under FSK16 (no broadcasting before 10pm). As to the lews: I would imagine the word being used to underline the joke. iun German, it's _Luden,_ as opposed to _Juden,_ like the priest said: "Whith a 'J', not an 'L'!". _Lude_ is a sort of oldfashioned colloquial word for _pimp,_ hence the referece to the _Reeperbahn,_ a street in Hamburg and Germany's most famous red light district.

"The little a*hole* is from Walter Moers, who also is the author of" Käptn Blaubär" which books are scary stories for adults while this blue bear also received a children TV show in the 90s.

Das kleine Arschloch is a cult character. As well as his granddad, der alte Sack (the old fart). The lews is just a case of bad translation. The Boy asked about "die Ludden" (an old German word for Pimp) and "die Juden" (the Jews). Its just one Letter apart. I would recomend you try to watch the hole movie ("Das kleine Arschloch") as well as the sequel (Das kleine Arschloch und der alte Sack") The movies Show a very dry and cynical side of german society and families. I love the movies as well as the comics and Walther Moers is a well known author with a huge fanbase!

It is simply not possible for another native speaker to get a truly authentic translation. A lot gets lost, especially in a pun that involves rhymes or words that have no similarities to one another in English, for example. As in the example described.

yes, such translations are difficult, or even impossible when also trying to preserve original jokes and plays on words. i found it great that they made the effort to try it. the only improvement might have been to add the word "pimp" in parentheses after the word "Lewds"

This 'little asshole' is not the main character created by Walter Moers, but one of the funniest and definitely the one using the most vulgar language. The stories are mainly published as comic books. He also wrote numerous fantasy books with nice illustrations about a universe in which books play a fundamental role. He describes all his fantasy creatures very poetically using what feels like an endless source of newly created words whose meaning are somehow easy to understand.Truly amazing word artist.

Fun fact: The writer Walter Moers is an enigmatic individual. He is not often seen in public, doesn't give interviews and there are even less fotos of him seen anywhere. It is only said that he is married and lives in Hamburg. Not only is he known for Kleines Arschloch or Käpt'n Blaubär, he also is the mind behind the Hitler-Parody "Ich hock in meinem Bonker" and wrote many books beside the known ones. He developed a whole Fantasy Universe around a fictional Continent called "Zamonien", on which so many different Beings and Creatures are living and he wrote as much as nine whole books around them - each of which brilliantly written and full of passion. I dont know if these books are translated into other languages but i highly recommend reading them to anyone!

I saw the film as a 15-year-old in the cinema with a few adult friends. It's much more badass than the Werner films. Before that, I also knew comics by Walter Moers, who always drew on the offensive line. Werner films, on the other hand, are by Rötger Feldmann and more funny than offensive. Both really great sources of ideas since the 80s.

That church scene is actually not from the original 1997' movie 'Das kleine Arschloch' (1997) but from its sequel "Das kleine Arschloch und der alte Sack" (engl. 'The little Asshole and the old fart') from 2006.

fun fact: the guy who made this movie (walter moers) also published several fantasy books which are a great read (they are nothing like this movie) the thing is they appeal to both kids and addults and they definitly have some of that "german fairytale" flair with some gruesome details, a couple of years ago the books or atleast some of them got translated into english and half of the amazons is just (presumably) americans telling people not to read the stories to their children

For the Catholic tongue thing, the ooooolder generation (think 80+ today) still stick the tongue out, the others get theirs in cupped hands and put them in their own mouth. But I beg to mildly disagree (with the movie) on the "no wine for Catholics". AT least where I grew up, they stopped giving it to all because having everyone drink out of the same cup is kinda gross, but the priest and the main helpers still drink out of the same cup. Otherwise, yeah, no censoring of swear words and such in movies etc.

There's a bit of a false friend situation when translating German christian denominations: Evangelisch does not equate to the American "evangelical", but is rather a broad term for the protestant church that came to be thanks to Luther. Germany has two big denominations: Katholisch and evangelisch.

I must have been around 20(maybe younger?) when I watched it, even though I was 12 when it came out. I never really liked it, either. To me it was just about a kind of disgusting character swearing all the time, not much else.😅 No wit, etc. Maybe I could watch it again sometime to see what I think about it now in my late 30s (especially after remembering my father laughing at some of the scenes). Seeing Ryan be so shocked was priceless, though.😂

children might have liked it because of swearing, and adults often disliked it for the same reason. common to both groups: they let some apparently obvious language determine their thoughts. listening closely to WHAT was said in that language by slowly watching single scenes and also by seeing this reaction shows what really might have been intended, and the great sarcasm and critique.
