A friend of mine, called Bert Chandler, used to run this type of establishment, along with his wife. A small corner shop that was like a two room Aladdin's cave. Items crowded within and hanging from the ceiling. Every available space used. And, if he didn't have it today, he'd probably get it for you on Thursday.

Truly we're a people separated by a common language, Jay. It doesn't take long for Americans to enjoy British humour, but some of the wordplay is just colloquial. I'm so impressed with how well you did with it. If it's any consolation, I wouldn't have gotten the last joke either without having been with family when I first saw it. There's so much great TV from this era. Fawlty Towers (only 12 episodes ever made), Only Fools and Horses. Hope you work some of these into your watch schedule. Loving the channel matey.

The last joke was talking about *Door Knockers* or *Tits,* just in case you didn't get it. Also their *Pronunciation Problems* sketch is similar to this and has a Blacked-up *Ronnie Corbett.* Plus their *Crossword* sketch is also quality.

Just to say yes, I remember the time when you'd buy a garden fork, and after many years the handle might break so stores like this sold spare ones because you never throw the perfectly good part away! 😅👌

You did very well, the last bit was bill hooks, which are other large gardening tools. The way he would have said it though would have sounded like bollocks which is a rude slang term for testicles. The original ending I think he was going to ask for knockers (slang for tits) and a large breasted female assistant would have been the one to replace the original assistant.

Although written by Barker, Corbetts actions and muttering really made this work. Barker wasn’t happy with the ending and only realised what should happen just before a live stage version of it when a buxom lady came out and said one or two

You did better than most Americans at understanding this one. In British English, pumps are not heeled shoes, they are flat shoes, usually for men or for children.

You should watch more of the Two Ronnies, they were absolutely brilliant English comedy! Also watch ANY of the shows that they starred in separately, or together outside of this show, they are equally as hilarious! Comedy writers through and through! Something else very, very worthwhile watching is Porridge, it's set in a prison and I'll say no more, just let the hilarity ensue mate! Hope you see this comment so long after your original post! Take care mate!

🤣 No Jay....back in the day, we English can be subjective without being crude. A hose is not a hoe's an a hose is not O's. Ronny Barker an Ronny Corbet were absolutely hilarious ! Jay...back in the day, many town stores were the only supply of dry goods, food stuff's and hardware supplies. Oh Bullocks 🤣

Here in the UK we've never used the term 'ho' for a woman. Also, way back, before superstores, there were shops like that, that sold almost everything, especially in small towns.

The handle for the fork is actually for a garden fork not a pitch fork. The garden one loosens the ground , a pitch is longer for straw to be thrown onto a stack. These days the handles are made of metal or fibreglass, the old ones were wooden and replaceable. The joke here is that in England we often don't sound h , so handles becomes andles, therefore four candles sounds like fork andles !😊 P.s. years ago, there were shops like this that sold just about anything, hence the odd diversity of his list. The tap washer is what you would call a faucet washer, the round rubber bit that is water tight. The 13 amp plug refers to the fuse rating so a phone for example is three amp but for example a drill is 13 amp.

Bollocks is a curse - swear word - in England and vernacular for testicles. Bollocks is used typucally as referring to something that is just not true, especially, if it is in relation to opinions, for instance, someone might say ' my team deserved to win' and anyone who saw the game and could see they did not deserve to win would reply, ' no way that is a load of bollocks'

Mate, when I left school, Myself and other wet behind the ears youngsters took any job, if you joined the building trade, unless you had a Sharpe brain, you could be mad a fool of daily. I watched many a young lad 16,17,18 be told to go to the decorators shop, and ask for the following. 1. A long stand... ( and the shop keeper would keep you there waiting for 30 mins) then the lad would ask where is the long stand,...( To which the shopkeeper would say, how long do you want to stand for) 2. Go and buy a tin of Stripped paint. 3. A Bucket of Steam. 4. A Glass hammer. 5. A box of Rubber Nails. Cruel I know but funny.

So, let's get this out of the way... You're not slow. Just because the UK and the US both speak English, it's not quite the same language. If you say "bill hooks" in the customer's accents it sounds like "bill-ucks", which is very nearly "bollocks", a slang term for testicles (or bullshit). The best example I can think of when it comes to differences in language is the word "fanny". In the US, patting someone on the fanny is a pat on the butt. In the UK it means 'a ladies private area', so patting someone on the fanny may land you in prison. Similarly, at the end when Ronnie Barker is talking about 'knockers' he is referring to door knockers, but is also a slang term for breasts - hence the joke of the shop keeper calling on a female assistant to help with that one. Keep up the good work, I'm glad you understand (mostly) our quaint British humour 😊 If you enjoy Ronnie Barker (the customer in this sketch) I urge you to watch 'Porridge', where he plays the part of a prisoner (convict). Porridge is a slang term for serving a prison sentence.

Unfortunately you've 'maybe' just seen the best executed, best 'written' sketch in UK TV history, so perhaps it's 'mostly' all downhill from there. Not to say there isn't a vast amount of 'funny' still to see mind you, just this is epoch level. A very good contender for me with this (for the funniest sketch) would be the Dead Parrot Sketch by Monty Python. There are several versions, I'd recommend, the original first, followed by the rerecorded version for their first movie (which segues into another classic sketch of The Lumberjack song, that's also a very funny sketch so you ought to do them together), then finally a must see is their _Secret Policeman's Ball_ live version of the 'Dead Parrot Sketch'. All are a must see. Unfortunately I can't find the original on YT, it appears every so often but then gets taken down. For some reason the movie version is always there kzitem.info/news/bejne/16SZz6utrKh_lpg And so is the live version kzitem.info/news/bejne/p5WezIOPbXt6qKA
