No we werent that bad but just everytime we thought we had a chance of winning a competition Ashley, we got beat and knocked out. Hence the jokes and sneers from those who basically laugh at the wave of enthusiasm, when England do well, the whole nation believe they can replicate 1966 world cup win. The coming home song, is also a reference to England introducing the world to football, where the game was invented and winning a tournament is bringing football back to where the game was invented. Hope that helps.

Song released 25 ago in 1996. "30 years of hurt" refers back to 1966 when England won the World Cup and the fact the tournament was being played in England too ( Football's coming home!). England is in an excruciating situation. The country that invented the game. Wembley is an emblematic home of football. England winning means bringing the game home. Frustratingly England is a good team but not normally the best in a given year. France, Germany, Italy, Brazil and many other countries have moments of brilliance. England, being consistently good does well in the early part of the tournament. We start to believe. Maybe, just maybe this is a chance to go back to the achievement of winning the World Cup against Germany in 1966. But it wasn't to be. England threw it away and often through missing penalty shoot outs (the most heartbreaking way to lose), often against Germany with whom we have history. The song is catchy and evokes the emotion of it all. As the tournament goes on English people will say to each other "It's coming home". Why do we do this to ourselves? I don't know but catchy though the song is it perpetuates the problem. The aching, longing, hoping,, celebration, heartache and loss. Maybe this time will be different and football will really come home.

So many people misunderstand this song. They think it's England being arrogant but actually the song is all about the frustrations of being and England fan. Constantly losing and being the butt of everyone's jokes and sneers. The song encourages people to just not give up and cheer for England as though they are champions anyway because if you cannot cheer for your team in defeat what right have you to celebrate with them in victory? And after over 50 years of losing England fans have definitely earned the right to celebrate.

It's an ironic self depracating song about all our (England's) near misses and failures since we won the (Jules Rimet) world cup trophy in 1966. This was recorded in 1996 (after 30 years of waiting, at that time). Now just keep on adding the years and we are still waiting for another major international trophy after losing in this year's European championship final. Fingers crossed for next year's World cup now, or, we will continue counting. 😭 I should also add that this song is sung at every major tournament that England qualify for, and the country builds itself up for victory, but are never surprised when we end up failing yet again. This time we were as close as we've been since 1966.

The story behind this song is: The British football association (FA) was looking for a song for EURO 1996 in England and they asked English comedians Baddiel & Skinner. They teamed up with the (then) famous band 'The Lightning Seeds'. But this song was a shock for the FA. Making more or less fun of England was not planned. But they released the song anyway and it became a huge success. Nowadays it is still seen as a patriotic song with some typical English humor 😁

When England was awarded the hosting of the Euros in 1996, it was a watershed, as English football was at a all-time low in the 1980's. Games were played in derelict stadiums with low attendances and hooliganism was accepted as a fact of life. There were also major tragedies at Hillsborough, the Heysel Stadium and Bradford. Any of those are a reaction video in itself, with the start of the 1990's marking a rehabilitration for the game in England.

This refers to the fact that in 1996, when this song was recorded, England hadn't won, or even appeared in, a major tournament final since winning the World Cup 30 years earlier in 1966. In fact, the Euros final, which they've just qualified for, is the first final they've qualified for since 1966, meaning it's our first final for 55 years. This song was released for Euro 96 which was actually hosted by England (all the games not just 4 or 5), which is why it actually refers to football coming home. The 30 years of hurt referred to the 30 years since England won the World Cup in 1966, and the throwing it away line referred to the chances we've had up until then with decent teams and good chances we've always thrown away good chances, usually in penalty shootouts like when England lost to West Germany in the semi final of World Cup Italia 90 (although a number of these also happened after this song came out). There was a follow up to this song with the same tune but slightly modified lyrics called Three Lions '98 that was done for World Cup 98 in France that actually references what happened in Euro 96, when England again got to the Semi Finals and again lost to Germany on penalties so you can see where the English mentality comes from!!!

The last tournament England won was the World Cup (at the time they played for the Jules Rimet trophy) in 1996. This song was written in 1996 when the European Championship was hosted by England. As the game had been started in England the English Football Association marketed the tournament with the tag “Football Coming Home”. Skinner and Bedeal, popular comedians of the day (still have a following now) wrote the tournament song in association with the group “The Lightning Seeds”. The thirty years of hurt relates to the frustration and disappointment of loyal fans who had followed England between 1966 and then (1996). England time and again go into major tournaments with squads filled with enormous talent but there is something about the England team it often lacks in bottle, On paper often look like one of the best teams in the world, stacked with world beating talent but always let it slip through our fingers. The jokes and sneers is about how we, as England fans often get carried away with how great we could be and then get beaten at the pivotal moment, often by teams we should be beating although sometimes by teams that are as good as us. England fans are known to be boastful and arrogant but its often with reason but when we get beaten in a major tournament it often fills other people with joy. However this is the first time we have made a final of a major tournament since 1966 . . . think about that, its 3 years before Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. This England team has brought great pride to us once again and restored waining faith of people that have doubted England in the past, whatever happens Sunday, i'll be proud of them.

I think this proves how much a song can make, noise, and that noise is heard by people. It’s basically a noise but a good noise. And then they have “listened” to that song. Then things can happen after that exponentially. It’s kind of intangible but fascinating when you think about it.

Before i watch Ashley, i need to let you know "its coming home" meaning at first was in 1996 and was a reference to England hosting a football tournament (and winning it) for the 1st time since 1966 (30 years of hurt) its coming back to the home of football! p.s "Jules Rimet still gleaming" Jules Rimet is the name of the world cup trophy we won in 1966

It was the 1996 UEFA Cup. England hosted it, but it was won by Germany who beat the Czech Republic 2-1. I think England ranked third and were knocked out in the semi-finals.

Speaking as a working-class lad from next to the largest housing estate in Northern Europe and a product of The Millwall Terraces since 1962 I have to say I find "Vindaloo" really crass though catchy. All it really says is that "we are going to score more than you" but this song and video detailed (then ) 30 years of hope, expectation, and ultimately misery and failure. Plus all the clips from the whole unblocked video re-create scenes from the past or actually show them like Nobby dancing and the re-constructions are excellent, as well:)...

England was always a good team but just not one of the very best, so the expectation was always high but they always fell at the quarter or semi-final stage. Plus they had a lot of close matches and bad luck along the way (Diego Maradona). So the fans knew they would blow it at some point but still remain hopeful. The song is from the point of view of a hopeful fan, but also includes the despair and empty feeling of losing that is inevitable for an England fan.

Ok. England keep losing big international matches (since 1966 in fact). This track, released by the two guys called Baddiel and Skinner (surnames) was released in 1996 when we though we had a real chance. It was not to be, but this became THE anthem Beverly since! PS - I ❤️❤️❤️❤️ love that you watched and enjoyed the actual match ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ you’re my new favourite American person! PS sorry I’m a bit drunk an stuff! ❤️❤️❤️❤️✌️🥰

I wouldn't say people go insane or anything if the song comes on. It's about the feeling the song embodies, that feeling is far bigger than the song itself. It's hardly a masterpiece, but I don't think it was supposed to be, nor I doubt would it have worked if it were more intricate. It works because it's a simple enough song to capture a far far greater meaning. So while people might listen to it on their own, when in crowds they sing it themselves. I doubt the Lightening Seeds or Baddiel and Skinner are at all unhappy with this, they know the song doesn't belong to them but to all of England now. And what is that greater 'meaning' the song represents? People have tried to explain here, and it's not surprising that a non English person would find some of the lyrics weird. But the explanations people are giving are good, so if they give you 'some' sense of what that meaning is, you can go ahead and multiply it by 100 and you might be somewhat close to understanding it!

Except the World Cup is next year in 2022. You mean the euros. You’re right about only winning the World Cup once. For those who don’t know, a “major tournament” means either a World Cup, or the Euros. Both tournaments are held every 4 years (eg. World Cup was in 2006,2010,2014,2018 etc and Euros were in 2008,2012,2016 but the 2020 euros were delayed until this year due to covid). But yes the last time we got to a major tournament final was in 1966. So no English person under the age of 55 has witnessed England reach a final of the Euros or a World Cup in their life time

Because England get to the semi finals of the world cup and European championships on many occasions and then get beaten, either by a close lose or they get beaten in penalties. The thing is for a country that invented the beautiful game they haven't had anywhere near the success they should have. Personally I prefer world in motion by new order. Brilliant song.
