This song helped me in a debate in highschool about how the Wehrmacht shouldn't be demonized, and how the Nazis are somewhat different from the rest of the German military. I did win the debate but everyone thought I was a Nazi supporter throughout the rest of highschool but I stood by my beliefs.

@@nonautemrexchristus5637 Its more like I made a last stand sort of speak, but I stood by defending the Wehrmacht because they were soldiers and I believe that they as a whole shouldn't be judged on the ones we see and not the ones we don't, no one is truly a saint and when you live in a country where you can be killed for disobeying state policy I can imagine that you don't have many choices. @@deadmanlnc2215 I was bullied at high school also, but I don't defend the organization known as the Wehrmacht, that throughout the entire war committed heinous acts of brutality across Europe. They didn't refuse orders out of fear, they refused them because they were conditioned to be Nazis, and felt they had to go along with what their other soldiers were doing. Even if that meant leading thousands of people into a ravine and machine gunning them, they would do it.

A lot of people forget that Germany, like most countries at the time, had the draft. A lot of those young men had no choice whether to fight or not. And if they objected to their orders, they were *shot.* It's a hard thing to ask someone, to do what's right or be killed. Especially when the propaganda machine is so strong that the 'right thing' becomes hard to discern.

For instance the Israel/Palestine or turkey/kurds debate. It shows the suffering and heartship that SOME Germans got through in ww2. It's a german production and together with "Band of brothers" my favorite ww2 movie/series!

The Wehrmacht may have been the German army during ww2, but i have doubts about their support of the nazi party. Other songs Sabaton has done mention the Wehrmacht diverting from orders and Nazi leadership like in The Last Battle and Heart of Iron. In the Last Battle they joined up with the US to repel an SS counterattack and rescue French prisoners at Castle Itter.

Interesting fact, the party (not sure if I can say its name) only won a plurality during the 1933 election (when they ended up coming to power) and not a majority, meaning only 43.9% of Germany actually supported them, but since they were so many other parties in that election, they ended up having the most votes.

A dual citizen, I was born in Germany and was later stationed there in the US Army for 2 years. I have a lot of family here and there. Considering the state of German after WW-1, it was easy for Hitler to come into power, giving great speeches and rebuilding the country and restoring their national pride. By the time most Germans knew where he was headed, it was too late to get rid of him. My German dad told me a story about how his father was a member of the 'Socialist Party' which supported Hitler, marched in parades, and went to meetings, etc. He did this publicly and therefore was above suspicion as her used his position as a shop owner to circumvent the ration system, while hiding his Jewish friends in a hidden room, in the basement of our apartment building. For many Germans (and now Russians) you have to play along to get along.

They were someone’s son but most were brainwashed at young ages very sad also Ima steal this comment is saw (with credits) (TrevorHendrix Media) “What I find so compelling about this song is that the chorus so vividly paints the message of the entire song. As the booming voices of propaganda shout at us the image that the high command wanted us to see "Panzers on a line, form the Wehrmacht's spine" it drowns out the singer who says "what about the men executing orders?". It's like the singer asks "what of the men?" And the shouting voice of propaganda is to say "don't think of the men. Think of the machine. Think of the mighty panzer. Think of the image. Think of the vision. Think of the goal. The men are only parts of that." And yet the singer still proclaims: "what about the men?".”

I truly love this song, it goes incredibly hard, but also the lyrics take the time to humanize the German soldiers. There was the draft, there were young men who were dragged into the war against their will. They were also heavily propagandized, go watch the movie “Swing Kids” and you’ll understand. The picture painted against Germany doesn’t really do them justice, were there evil people? Absolutely! But to paint all of Germany with a single brush is unfair. I’ve taken a WW2 class that delves deep into the war, including what it was like for those in Germany. When I try to express what you said about the Germans, their two choices, and how they were dragged into the war, most people think I’m a Nazi, it’s so hard to make people understand, we’re so ignorant nowadays. I feel bad for Germany. It probably doesn’t mean much at all but I love you and forgive you Germany.

I really enjoy this song because it never steps into the "clean Wehrmacht" myth. the German army was complicit in and direct executor of the Nazi's ideals from the Commissar Decree(legalizing murder of Soviet Political officer) to the many many warcrimes committed against African POWs and civilians in France and Russian/Slavic ones in the East not to mention the aiding of SS in rounding up jews and poles for execution. There was soldiers and some generals who saw what was happening in Poland in 1939 at the start and tried to speak out but they either lost their jobs or were told to ignore it under fear of persecution by 1941 every cog in the Nazi warmachine never acted alone no matter what the individual thought or did. It was a war of extermination whether they wanted it or not

The movie is called "Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter" (Our mothers, our fathers)! Absolute recommandation. The English three part movie is called "Generation War". It shows the perspective of the ordinary people. And of course; Before and during it's release it sparked a huge controversy here in Germany, because it showed human emotions instead of, like every other movie, pure demonization of every German soldier involved.

Take ww2 for example were you had state funded propaganda (like today) that had monopoly on information. censoring leads to suffering remember that. Back then germans were told " we are fighting a fight for survival for europes way of life against the influence of the bolsjevisk agenda in Moscow backed by the jews" In Moscow the word said "we are under attack from the imperialist jews of germany and USA." isnt that grand!!!
