Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, if you are in a position to, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL videos (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

I'm ambidextrous as well but find my left hand easier. I was like you and found it gets easier with more practice. You can switch between conversations, just don't bounce back and fourth during a single one.

Around the 28 minute mark, there's a sentence, "PEOPLE THEMSELVES HOME-WITHOUT..." Is there a general rule for when the extra "themselves" is used? What is it emphasizing/clarifying? Thank you!
@sign-language
2 жыл бұрын
In regard to understanding the use of the sign THEMSELVES in a sentence such as: PEOPLE THEMSELVES HOME-WITHOUT, YOU SYMPATHY? It may help to use a comparative approach based on a language you already understand (in this case, English). For example, in English consider when would you say each of the following (and if it really matters). 1. Do you have sympathy for people that are homeless? 2. Are you sympathetic toward people who are homeless? 3. Regarding homeless people -- are you sympathetic? 4. Do you feel sympathy for the homeless? I suggest to you that the use of "THEMSELVES" in the ASL version is equivalent to the use of "that are" and/or "who are" in the English version.

I have a question! For the sign FAULT can you sign WRONG instead? FAULT looks like TIRED but TIRED is with both hands. Is that the main difference? Also, for "F"-grade can that also be A**HOLE? For both of these words if your interpreting does it depend on the context?
@sign-language
4 жыл бұрын
The signs WRONG and FAULT don't overlap much. So, no, I wouldn't advise trying to use WRONG instead of fault." FAULT and a casual-one-handed version of TIRED are differentiated only by context and/or (optional) mouth movement. No I'm NOT telling you to mouth the words -- I'm simply telling you that if someone "happens to" mouth or partially mouth one of the words then that provides a further clue. In general, yes, TIRED is (at least sometimes) shown in ASL dictionaries as a two-handed sign whereas FAULT is "never" done with two hands. I hate using the word never when discussing "language" but I really have "never" seen FAULT done with two hands because if we did it would look like "TIRED"

Hi, I am wondering about "fingerspell" vs "spell". For example, I am a good speller, but I am not a good fingerspeller.
@sign-language
3 жыл бұрын
Laurie, LOL that is a good / fun question. Several approaches: You could add more context until your meaning is clear. For example you could sign that you can write or type words accurately but not fingerspell them. However there is a version of "fingerspell" that means: "to convey via fingerspelling." See: kzitem.info/news/bejne/o2mIyoZvf6SeiGU WRITE, WORD, I KNOW HOW SPELL INDEX-[point-at-non-dominant-hand], (nod), BUT FINGERSPELL-[version-2] I INEPT. ---------- Or you could (heh) fingerspell the word "spell."
