@@seanthomas6465 I remember when my dad and I went to see Richard Jewel months back, and I looked up the reviews of the film before we watched it and found that there was a fictional depiction of Kathy Scruggs, the news reporter that leaked the FBI's suspicion towards Jewel, insisting that she got it by means of offering sexual favors. As indicated by an open letter by the editor-in-chief of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where Kathy worked before dying of a drug overdose in 2001, this was not true and her portrayal in the film(which is a character arc trope I couldn't really get into) was a slanderous and vilifying take on her character. Many, including myself, find this ironic, as the film was supposed to be a takedown of Richard's own character assassination, and yet, by using(whether intentional or not) this stereotype of female reporters engaging in sex for information, they essentially did just that to Kathy. It was a nice movie overall, compelling character arc for Richard and his relationship with Watson, and my dad and I were engrossed in talking about it walking out afterwards, but I knew that it was a movie, so learning of the inaccuracy in how Kathy was portrayed(which I personally didn't find compelling) and the stereotype it perpetuates didn't surprise to badly. I'm not one to critique Oliva Wilde's portrayal by any means, per say, but I just feel the script didn't work in her favor to make Kathy seem more than annoyingly brash and rude about lacking a "scoop of the century(unless that was the part of Kathy's actual personality they got right, but I don't know)" to the point where I couldn't feel the shock factor of her offer to sleep with the fictitious FBI agent that they were going for.

A lot of the Boy Scout leaders of my old troop served in the Iraq war. They all had different opinions of Kyle. Mostly negative because of his lying about his achievements. Often times, when they talked about Iraqis, the term “savages” when something they excluded to the people they were fighting. Not the Iraqis in general. In fact, they said they working and fighting alongside other Iraqis against the insurgents. One thing worth noting: in the book, a passage written by Kyle’s wife did talk about how he experienced night terrors after coming back, often punching the air to wake up. This might be a sign of PTSD, but I’m not a psychologist.

In my opinion, this was one of Clint Eastwood's worst, the movie looked like it was an anti-war (or pro-war) film that ended up doing the opposite, the pacing was a mess, no one to really root for, and I blame the source material and Eastwood's efforts to make it more palatable to a general audience as the reason why the film isn't that good. It ended up just being stuck in the middle with no direction whatsoever unsure of what it should be. But I could understand why Eastwood made the changes since the book was even worse in comparison to the film. (let's just say in the book Chris Kyle may have enjoyed his job a little too much for comfort). The film gets a meh 5/10, and the book a 2/10.

I read "American Sniper." The intro scene is re-written Hollywood, as Kyle killed the woman with an assault rifle, not a sniper rifle. He would go to sniper school after that event. Kyle's biggest thing he regretted was that he was not able to save more lives due to the rules of war. He even criticizes the US government in telling politicians to let the soldiers fight the war and not tie their hands behind them. Kyle did earn the name "the Devil of Ramahdi," but it's quite humorous that the insurgents confused him with his spotter on the wanted photos (he was most likely given away by one of the Iraqi Army recruits). Also, what's a great sniper legend without a duel with another great sniper similar to the unconfirmed Vassily Zaitsyev against a German sniper school teacher in Stalingrad or G.Sgt. Hathcock against "the Cobra" and "the Apache" in Vietnam or the fictitious M.Sgt. Beckett against the Panamanian sniper "de Silva" in the film "Sniper?"

I read Bowden’s book, which I believe was fairly new at the time, in the Fall of 2001. Blackhawk Down (movie) came out years later, and I was pretty excited because I’d read the book. BHD (movie) was released in January 2002, well after Kyle’s training. An editor of military “history” should fact check some things before a book gets released or at least have some knowledge of other military history non fiction and movie release dates, unless of course the author makes such an ass of himself, the editor just says f’it, and publishes the nonsense.

Kyle probably spoke about the Iraqis that way because he talked himself into viewing the Iraqis as sub human to justify his own actions, and his continuous defence of his positions probably has to do with the fear of dealing with the moral and phsycological consequences of his actions if he dared to question his own war time logic. A tragedy that hopefully can be solved with counseling than with outright hatred which would rather antagonize him into further radicalization. I bet that if it would be made, Antifa would riot against it and call it a ‘fascist’ film because it dares to criticise the Soviets and communism.
@redblaze8700

StrangeGuy254 No they wouldn’t, because in that conflict it was the Russians who were the aggressors. Finland was just a small country trying to defend itself. They were never officially a German alley; they just happened to have a common enemy.

I hate the opening caveat cus it simply validates what each individual person wants to hear despite the facts. It also gives the impression that both sides are equally wrong so no matter what the truth is it's wash, which in turn is a W for the side propagating myth & lies as facts.

Really it's hard to get mad at Kyle because he probably didn't write the book. He was just somebody that was scooped up to promote the Iraq War as a symbol. He was told what to say, and was given tons of publicity and millions of dollars, then he was disposed of, with a royal funeral. Wag the dog.

Just because a film is propaganda doesn't mean it's a bad movie by definition. However I understand why some may think that. Instead of being truthful they make Chris more conflicted and emotional to be more relatable. Alot of people in the military are assholes by our standards. They're trained to be. And alot of them love war. To depict otherwise for the sake of the characters image is a form of revisionism. By the way alot of people say whitewashing to include any sort of revisionism. Though that's not what it is they interchange whitewashing and revisionism as if they were synonyms.

OK Cynical Historian you should try a British film next you would have a long list to choose from but can I suggest Beneath Hill 60. A good Australian imperial war film of The Great War. Also it would be good to see a video on War Plan Red.

+TheChancellorsPost The Trench, a British film on WW1 and the days leading up to the Battle of the Somme does pretty well in it's historical/real-life based depictions. Daniel Craig's acting of a BEF NCO (well really any 'old hand' type NCO in a combat unit) is top knotch.

Clint Eastwood was a talented character actor who was limited in range to "Dirty Harry" characters. His directing skills are even more limited to portraying his ultra-conservative worldview, no matter the subject matter. I never expect an Eastwood movie to be based on any facts or observable reality, and this movie didn't disappoint.

The "terrorists" were insurgents defending their homeland against an invading imperial force who reduced their country to rubble and indiscriminantly massacred innocents.

it's not either or. we can do both. the fact is only a small proportion of soldiers who see combat report ptsd, so it'd behoove Hollywood to honestly portray that

I'm on the right of many political things, and heck - it's just a bad movie. In addition to everything you mentioned, it has strange pacing and tone, and seems more like a rough cut of the movie than the final product. It's hard to believe that Eastwood was involved.
