The "special surprise" they were referring to in the Holland album must have been the 7" single - Mt. Vernon and Fairway.

Thanks for posting this! They are both charming. Years ago, I was having lunch at The Farmers Market at Fairfax & 3rd, in LA. I was eating gumbo. I looked up and facing me from the next table was Diane Rovell. I wanted so badly to walk up to her table and tell her how much I loved the Spring album. But I didn't. Probably a good decision. Fond memory, though.

Referring to it as The Elements as well. Really interesting, seeing as it has been questioned whether or not that was actually part of the original concept. Apparently it was.

@@paulcasey6759 I think maybe that was Brian's thought process...but it didn't get him out of trouble for long...I think the eventual split and divorce from Marilyn was started soon after the MIU album, if not during...and I think MIU was the last Beach Boys album with the majority of the songs written by Brian...oddly enough it was the first Beach Boys album I owned and listened to and I loved it so much I bought more (first a budget album at that time, Love You, & then L.A...then Endless Summer, Spirit of America, & their newly released at the time Keepin the Summer Alive😂(I still think the MIU songs were fine but Al's production skills, while proficient, were nowhere near Brian's

@Ron You can imagine Brian's thinking - "y'know, I might just get away with it...gotta be smart...tell Dennis it's about some waitress I met... ", lolol. All those, what we might as well call "late period" BB albums, have at least a few gems on them, especially LA, and Love You is a complete, essential artifact; probably their last. Have you heard Dennis' Bambu? It's even better than Pacific Ocean Blue - totally stupendous, actually. Much of it's completely unsuited to the BB's, though. Mikey would've had a fit at Time For Bed, f'r instance, and it shows influences that are totally absent from the Boys - Bowie's Low, for example.

Brian and Marilyn were kinda both sleeping around for a while prior to their divorce, although from what I've read, Marilyn didn't do so until Brian suggested it. Still. Banging your wife's sister, possibly having something of a side relationship with her, that had to have been kind of crazy and hard for Marilyn.

What can they say, if the album was produced by Brian, most of the songs written by him. Even the idea of creating the group American Spring. It was his idea. So I don't see anything wrong with host's questions.

Look, we have a project conceived of by Brian Wilson who never toured and rarely did interviews. He wrote all the songs. They said it themselves. Yes, they are the ones promoting the album, but in they are representing his project. Bob Harris knows that he can’t interview Brian. Bob would also be asking about Brian if he were interviewing the Beach Boys themselves, and Brian wouldn’t be there with the Beach Boys either.

Brian made the music, produced, arranged everything, from a single bass note to all vocal harmonies... that's why these American Spring and Spring recordings are remembered and treasured. He could've hired a couple of anonymous singers with the same results

This is classic footage, wish there was more video of American Spring available, both interviews and performances. In some ways an extra creative branch of Brian Wilson that emerged when problems surfaced in BBoys compositions. The Holland LP they talked about was great imo, and marked the end of that golden age of creative BBoys period that evolved in 10 or 11 years. Thereafter only partially glimpsed in future albums Id argue. The surprise Marilyn and Diane spoke of was the small vinyl 'Mount Vernon and Fairway' fairytale , including I m the Pied Piper, Magic Transistor Radio. Almost as radiojingles. Exceedingly strange on first hearing, but grew on me alot. In those jingles were glimpses of the harmonies still inside Brians psyche, stuff that could have been developed if the motivation had been there to do so. Marilyn and Diane actually had really good and complementary vocals, evident on the Spring album.

I was thinking the same thing. I don't think that Marilyn indulged quite as much as Brian did, but I'm sure that she did experiment occasionally. She was the young wife of a rock star, living in the Hollywood hills, it was the 60s/70s, and she was surrounded by lots of other rock stars...so 2+2.
