Scottish actress Clare Grogan (the feminist) was actually a pop star in the early 80s with the band Altered Images, they had three top-ten hits and a couple of hit albums in the UK. Later she became a presenter on VH1 (Europe) throughout the 90s. Her role in Father Ted is a parody of singer Sinead O'Connor.

That's Claire Grogan. Used to be lead singer in an Indie group called, Altered Images, had a couple of hits in the 80's. She's Scottish, so can reasonably easily pull off an Irish accent. The character Claire's playing is based around Sinead O'Connor, an Irish singer who also had a couple of hits in the 80's and was known for being a very vocal critic of the Catholic Church.

The Irish "activist" female singer at the beginning of the episode is probably intended as a parody of the outspoken Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O'Connor from the late 1980s, who often using her music and celebrity as a platform, campaigned for reforms against the more traditionalist elements of Irish society and other political issues.

In later series after 6, another actress replaced her. Everyone that has ever watched Red Dwarf has a crush on her including me. 🙂She was also in the band "Altered Images" and did quite a famous song "Happy Birthday" along with a few others "Don't Talk To Me About Love". 14:44 this pause is funnier than anything that was in Father Ted 🤣

Hi again guys from New Zealand :) So.. each parish has it's own Father Jack, Ted, Dougal, and Mrs Doyle archetypes, and those behavioral types all take a hilarious pot shot (tongue-in-cheek look) at the Catholic Church and it's hypocrisy. All of the visting priests, Especially the Dougal and Father Jack types, that exhibit the same behaviors to show generality across the board in the church. The visiting priests often exhibit some specific behavioral type, such as the priest in this episode who is destructive. Another talks too much, another talks in a boring monotone, and so on; some of the Dougals' exhibit rebellious behaviors XD The Father Ted series are all very satirical, absolutely hilarious, non-pc, and very well written. Nothing can be taken literally ;)
