Entertaining reaction Squire. The "sack of coke" that you laughed at refers to "coke", a processed derivative of coal that burns hotter in an open fire or steam engine etc. Whether they meant it to also be a euphemism for an "entertainment powder" is unclear. The BBC presented itself as very innocent and family friendly at the time but history tells us that this was not always the case.... You decide. Thanks pal.

Ronnie Barker was, truly, a genius. The Two Ronnies were humble and loveable, but, like Shakespeare, who was also, a little sophisticated, something can get lost in translation. when you are dealing with art that is so intensley, specifically focused, and is not written for modern America, or many other aesthetic palates. I think, KB, "Porridge" is something you might check out. Its a comedy set in a prison and is probably Ronnie Barker's most accessible work. Its also bloody funny.

Ronnie Barker's genius was being able to memorize things that made no sense, one of the hardest things to do for an actor. If you found Four Candle (= Fork Handles) a problem it was probably down to the way that language between the US and UK has changed so much and even now, some 40 years or more, since that scene was recorded some of the items on his list just don't make sense as that type of 'buy anything' hardware store just don't exist....O's - sounds like 'H'ose (and Hose can mean pantyhose as well as the garden type of hose), followed up with "P's" is just funny because of course the shopkeeper was expecting letter P's and not canned Peas.

You're far more removed so I can imagine even just the shop itself confusing you... Buying peas, sneakers, fuses, and lettering for houses in the same tiny shop... Was alien. Let alone some of the words, accent (missing the H), inuendos etc. A more modern homage that you may get is Ronny Corbet 'blackerry' sketch. It's nice that you show a keen interest in our comedy.. Some comedy shows make a play on British culture, and I think the two Ronnies is such an example.. They use a constant play on words with double meanings, and I can see by your laughs (or lack of) it's quite difficult to follow. Of-course, Mr Bean could clearly appreciate all that, if he was going to enjoy any international success. I think Laurel and Hardy were the early pioneers of international comedy without much translation being needed.
