they had an ames room in the psychology area of my university when I did my neuroscience degree. We took turns walking into it, while others watched. It really does look like a person is magically shrinking or growing in size when they walk through it. But you need to look at them from a certain angle. Looking from any other angle makes the illusion disappear. This is not some sort of camera trick - it is just an optical illusion. It was created by an ophthalmologist named Adelbert Ames Jr.

In fact its quite easy to replicate... First place the 2 vertical edges at the back as if it was just a normal room, everything at right angles. Then, taking the view point as the centre of the front wall, simply push the left edge back (so the the eye, the left edge, the new left edge are all in line). Then make this new left edge longer so it looks exactly like the original left edge (from same view point). Then simply connect up all the edges to form a box, and you have your room.

I have never seen the Ames room live and have a question with regard to this optical illusion: Why does the visual system not detect the different distances through the accommodation? Why does the depth cue of accommodation (eye focussing) not work here? Thank’s in advance for any hint.
@zazelby
9 ай бұрын
Usually, you're viewing the room using only one eye through a fixed-location peephole, so it removes a lot of the normal visual cues.
@Olearius

@@zazelby Thank's for the input. You are right: If you watch the 3D-scene (monocular) through a peephole or small aperture, the depth of field gets enhanced (for whatever reason) and accomodation becomes generally needless. Consequently, distance information provided by accomodation status is in the case of a peephole weak if not null.
